In football, there is a recipe of success that says "play toward your strenghts". Below ill present an opinion on what happened yesterday and yesterday alone. Please dont take this post out of context because i happen to believe Fitz is a very good coach...but he isnt perfect. It seemed to me that he entered yesterday with a beaten mind and didnt trust his players. I believe my opinion is well established with the following plays.

1. Kickoff
Instead of doing what we have trusted to do this whole year, fitz adjusted the ko team prior to the game and focused on target kicking. The target kick actually was well executed by our kicker into the right quadrant. However, our team was ill prepared and waved into that quadrant. Brown queiro both had lost containment as the returner made a beeline immediately for the wide open left side of the field untouched.
how to correct this....trust your team with what they have been doin all year. Or better yet put in mitchell to kick the ball out of the endzone like other teams do.

2. Punt team. Instead of being impressed with michigan film, fitz should have watched our film. Our punt coverage has been absolutely phenomenal all year with watkins long mcshepherd absolutely pounding returners. Thats how you marginalize a returner. Instead fitz said postgame that our punting accomplished its objective to take the ball out of the retruners hands. Not so fast. To limit returns, our punter pooched punts 30 yards. As the net was atrocious. This lack of trust in our excellent gunners gave michigan great field position and also gave our offense bad field position.

3. Didnt trust our defense so he entered the game with a very passive defense. No blitz no nothing. Our d doesnt overwhelm anyone playing on its heels. Result was two easy predictable drives.
correction: trust your d to make big plays...dont put them on the ropes. Let them go. To fitz credit, he adjusted and brought heat the rest of the game and the result was 3.5 sacks and 5 punts and one FG. But his lack of trust previously already cost us the game.

4. Offense.
He failed to trust his offense as well. When driving on 3rd and two....he already gave up on them by running a very lame 31 dive up the middle beautifully positioning for the fg. When he didnt go for it on 4th down, it became obvious that he gave up on the prior down.

5. Other style points. Leave thorson in at the 8 minute mark and learn. We had a tremendous opportunity to have him in passing mode without the game on the line. A td or fg would have been something to build upon for next week

6. Screw the michigan fight song. Fitz didnt want to "disrespect" the michigan fight song so he walked our team out of the tunnel like they were goin to a funeral. The michigan band was playing that fight song for 20 minutes so who cares. Bring the team on the field with emotion.

Its easy to monday qb but it seems to me that fitz intentionally had us play on our heels. We arent good enuf to play that way. We also have outstanding playmakers on defense who we can trust to make plays when we play aggressive football. There was a reason why michigan players made big plays and part of it certainly had to do with fitz not trusting his own players.

Yeah, you must be right, Fitz clearly doesn't trust his players. Are you serious?

Niswander punted 8 times for a 35.0 net average. Michigan had zero return yards. He is only averaging 38 yards per kick in other games, so I don't get your point about how playing it safe with Jabril Peppers as the returner was such a bad strategy.

This is nothing new. We like Fitz. However, how may times has he be outcoached by the better Big 10 coaches ? That is why I like our chances the next 2 weeks against Iowa and Nebraska ? They do not have the best coaches.

Oh i dont know how efficient it was with our focus on peppers. Yeah niswander had one that bounced out of bounds at 45 to spike the avg to a still poor 35 but having peppers fair catch 23 yard punts, 28 yard punts and 33 yard punts arent wonderful. Peppers isnt wow. This whole season his best punt return, even against poor teams is only 28 yards. Whatever the case, harbaugh told his punter to do what he does instead of focusing what what shuler can do. Its called trust, even though shuler is leading the big in conference only returns. The result was booming punts and very very bad field losition for our offense. Just my perspective.

I agree. Fitz should do better against those two. It seemed as if he was intimidated by harbaugh though. He should have got jims autograph.

I agree, the weak punts are killing them on field position.

When you're getting beat 38-0, it's a little more than the coaching. I think Stanford, Duke and Minnesota have pretty good coaches, but we managed to beat them.

All of those teams looked good since playing us. The minny qb looked like dan marino yesterday. And duke remains on a roll.

Not sure paraphrasing the Princess Bride on a sports board is the best idea, but I don't think profane quite means what you think it does. Football opinions might be unconventional or even insulting, but I have a hard time thinking they would ever be profane---offending God (if you believe in that) or morals. God has bigger stuff to deal with than football.

That said, while I see your point about the scheme being inadequate and too conservative, there were a lot of things that had to happen to result in a 38-0 shutout. In the proverbial 10 games with the Wolverines, this team would lose the majority, but they would be a lot more competitive in most of them.

Thats inconceivable.

I think Pat trusts his defense and doesn't feel like the incremental gain of a few yards was worth the potential risk of a great punt returner breaking a big one. He was willing o let the defense make stops, and after the first couple of series they did. Punting was nowhere near the top of the list of reasons NU was blown out.

How may times have we beat Minnesota since Kill has been there ?

Re: #5
No comment, but it says something that Rudock, up 31-0, was on the field throwing long after Thorson had seen his final snap. Neither approach is right, but they're certainly different.

You know what? Harbaugh is right. Play to the final whistle. Not like Rudock couldn't use the work. And Pat was right to sit CT too. Nothing to be gained from further pounding.

Well, the 'Cats went away from the type of D (aggressive up front due to trust in the corners) which helped them win those games and not ironically, Stanford fans were very critical of Shaw's overly conservative playcalling on O (one thing being not utilizing Hogan's legs - which Shaw did end up doing against USC).

Afraid I must agree, Turk. Profane is an adjective you use often and almost always incorrectly. It doesn't mean wrongful or disrespectful or inappropriate or whatever you're wanting to express. Whatever Turk's thoughts and beliefs may be, they are never profane.

NU and Fitz have gone 3-2 against Jerry Kill since he took over the program.

Don't know about that. He had a number of the starters out, but kept Rudock in for some reason, Rudock took some unnecessary shots, and Michigan backup QB situation is the reason why Rudock was brought in in the first place. Seemed like an unnecessary risk to me when the game was not in doubt.

Considering that he passed in the red zone, its fairly obvious he had him in to win cruel. And thats what harbaugh does and thats awesome!

And his entire defensive unit stayed in. They asked him about it in his press conference and he said "it was necessary".
Our coach tapped out officially with 8 minutes to go.

I am using the word absolutely correct in the context, it seems to me. With Fitz as the High Priest of a very real idol, ie, nu football. Not that it has to be an idol but most of us consider nu football as a sacred whether we know it or not.
