As a research scientist, this story breaks my heart. However, I will say that it is not as easy as you might think to cheat like this in science. You may get away with it for a while, but you will eventually get caught. Now, you may say he beat the system because he did so well for so long, but he will likely go down as a fraud and no one will believe his work, even if 99% of it was true and accurate. Most researchers aren't willing to take that risk.
