Not sure if anyone caught this, but 2016 Northwestern forward commit Rapolas Ivanauskas rose 55 spots into the Rivals100 in the latest ranking. Here's what Rivals hoop expert Eric Bossi wrote about him:

RAPOLAS IVANAUSKAS
Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy
Prior to July, Rivals.com had only been able to evaluate the Northwestern-bound combo forward on film. As it turns out, the film didn't do his game justice and he was extremely impressive once we got to see him in person. He can shoot, handle the ball some and should be able to play as a jumbo small forward or stretch four in Evanston. For his efforts he made a huge jump from No. 146 overall all the way to No. 91.

Playing against top competition this winter will help him. Even practices at Brewster will make him better. Another rating service has him around #65.

And I forgot that Barrett Benson is also a Rivals 4*, and clocks in at #110. First time in history that NU has 2 4* recruits in the same class.

I'm sure by the end of the year this will put us in the middle of the big ten in terms of rankings

Was not meant as a slight. I'm stoked about NU basketball. Recruiting will continue to improve and as one said all scholarship athletes are legit D1players. I think we make the NCAA tournament this year.

My mistake. Sorry about that. I agree with you, middle of the Big 10 would be a fine result for the third Collins class! (And I was one of the people how posted that all scholarship players are legit D1 player FWIW)

Awesome. Hard not to be excited about him wearing an NU uniform, along with Benson!

Since NU recruits usually LOSE ranking after commitment, Rapolas must be even better than they can now bring themselves to say...

i think lots of people are sleeping on on IR. he was will come in playing a role unlike anyone on the team due to his body size and skill set.

what will be fun is

bmac/ash/brown
lindsey/law
law/falzon
falzon/rap/tap
pardon/benson

I think it will be a pretty deep and diverse group. But I think Ash is more of a two. But I also think Mac is a bit more of a two. Anywho - I see it as:
Mac/Brown
Lindsey/Ash
Law/IR
Falzon/IR
Benson/Pardon

That's a long 9 man rotation plus the possibility of another 5th year transfer. I can see sitting Brown and sending Ash as a combo (remember that CCC is pushing the notion of Law bringing the ball down the floor on occasion). If IR needs some muscle and Law and Falzon continue to show they can play, I could see Tap, Skelly or Sanjay replacing IR for 2016 - or even an established 5th year transfer.

I think the real interesting battle will be Pardon v Benson for a wide open 5 spot. Pardon will have a year of experience, college muscle, chemistry - but many around here feel he is undersized. Benson isn't much bigger, but much more highly touted. I think both guys will be given the chance and some PT early to see who will win this spot. I do expect Pardon to be given the token nod to begin OOC until a clear starter emerges.

What will happen to that last schollie???

I suspect Collins will look for a grad transfer for the last scholarship.

Tap, Sanjay and Skelly round out the last 3, and all would play significant roles on prior NU teams, showing how much the talent level has improved 1-12.

It seems from the outside that this staff can really identify (hidden) talent and then go after it like few others.

Their pool is much smaller because of admissions. The four star guys are more obvious. But the guys that really excite me are the Lindsey, Skelly, Pardon and Ash types. Guys that weren't four stars, but are Big Ten ready and sort of look like higher recruited talent. B Mac is at the top of the list.

And in regards to RI, he was arguably the top priority in Collins' three years. Throw out what the services say or don't say. The staff is completely confident that he's elite.

I did not think it possible for NU to bring in this much talent.

Sorry, but I disagree that Skelly and Lindsey were "Big Ten Ready" as freshmen. Which is OK, if they make the jump into Big 10 bodies their Sophomore year. I suspect Ash and Pardon will struggle this season too as they adapt to the physical play in the Big Ten.It will be a luxury to be able to grow players into their Big 10 bodies without playing them extensive, meaningful minutes their freshman year.

Skelly had a Big 10 body as a freshman. I think he has a higher ceiling than a lot of folks give him credit for.

Collins said last year that he had a Big 10 body. I agree with you on the high ceiling. Case of adding to his skill set and becoming more and more dangerous. Love his motor and attitude.

Agreed as well. He was limited offensively last year but he can be a poor man's Dennis Rodman on defense in terms of blocks, steals and guarding multiple positions. He had the same number of steals as Demps and one more than McIntosh in about 7 minutes a game. They need to create more turnovers, but it's still impressive for a 4.

How much of that is because he was basically playing out of position? He was a 4 out of HS but when he got in last year primarily as a 5. This year, I believe he is supposed to get back to the 4.

Rhetorical question? Anyway, I think you nailed it. He was a 4 playing 5 many times. It will be fun to watch his improvement this season.

He also showed a pretty nifty touch with interior passing. He was usually good for one or two really open layups for other guys each game. In limited minutes, that's an encouraging sign.

Good point. I had forgotten about that. There was a lot to like in very limited playing time.

I have no idea if he is a consistently good defender of if he can score consistently. But at a minimum, he seems like a guy that can provide a spark and potentially make game changing plays on the defensive end. He might be a high risk/high reward type player, but it's great to have a player that can do the big things in addition to setting picks and taking charges. Lumpkin already does the little things. We don't need more than one of those guys in the front court.

Actually, he was the first guy we have had with a proto typical 4 body in a long time. We now have more but he really brings something we had not had in a while. Glad he gets back to the 4as that is where he belongs.

There was more excitement about Benson's commitment than Rap's round these parts largely due to Benson's Rival's star rating, but was always more excited about IR (who was more highly regarded by the local talent evaluators).

Benson will need some time to develop (as per usual for 5s) - if things work out, could be a better/more advanced Olah; not quite as big as Olah, but a similar type of player (tad more athletic, but diff. from Pardon) and one who has competed against better competition in HS).

Almost giddy in anticipation of the thought of finally getting to see the twin towers come to fruition after not getting to see Shurna and Coble play together.

Rap is listed at 208 which isn't bad considering he has another year of HS BB and an off-season to gain weight.

If that 208 is accurate, that's over 10 lbs on Law.

May not see it as much in 2016-17, but having 2 6-7/6-8 Fs who can shoot it lights and take it to the basket will cause headaches for opposing coaches (still think Law will get the start at the 3, but at times when CC wants to go big - can see Law switched over to the 2-spot).

Pardon and Benson are diff. types of centers (Pardon being a good bit more athletic) and only an inch in difference in height (which Pardon probably makes up w/ his above average reach).

Even if one wins the starting job - some of the playing time will depend on match-ups (assuming both are legit B1G 5s).

Based on CC's style of play, Pardon is probably the better fit.

This.

And this.

People tend to overlook the impact of playing out of position (it would have been asking a lot out of Skelly to take on veteran B1G PFs).

From the highlights of the Spain trip - the one thing that stood out (aside from all the dunks) was Skelly taking contact in the paint and still managing to hit the shot (of course, we didn't get to see the misses, but Skelly had a pretty good FG %).

As some had notice last season, Skelly had a knack of being a PitA for opponents; should be an even bigger PitA w/ a year of experience under his belt and playing his natural position.

If CC wants to go w/ the meanest/most physical lineup in 2016-17 at times...

1 - Lindsey (assuming he can handle point duties); if not Ash.
2. Law
3. Lumpkin
4. Skelly
5. Pardon

Probably won't ever see that - but one thing for sure, CC will have a lot of options in mixing and matching (probably will want to mix the better defensive players w/ the better shooters - so Rap and Lumpkin/Skelly together and Law w/Falzon (another option being Tap and Skelly).
