I caught a lot of crap for criticizing Jim Phillips’s 10 year contracts that he doled out to Fitz and CCC because he was afraid that they would be poached. We’ve already seen the net effect on our MBB program (it’s screwed). JP didn’t know how to recruit revenue coaches and was afraid Fitz would leave. Now, Fitz has neither pressure nor motivation to change. JON should have been gone midway last season.
Now our FB program feels similarly screwed. 10 year contracts in pretty much anything are simply stupid. I don’t get the rationale. It doesn’t breed innovation: it breeds complacency. It leads to laziness, nepotism, and complacency.
Why should Fitz, Jimbo Fisher, or Brian Kelly do anything? They have massive guaranteed buyouts so they can go through the motions, battle with the media, and let their programs slip into incompetence.
If anything, a 4-year extension every year makes sense if things are going well and you want to guarantee recruits that they’ll play for the same coach. But you don’t give your star coach everything they want guaranteed for 2.5 presidential terms. Because they’ll do what they want.
I’m no longer sure that Fitz cares about winning - which pains me to write. He has all the records and just wants to coast until his kids are done playing after college, and then maybe he’ll do TV.
When is Fitz’s contract up, and what is his buyout? Will Pat Ryan be forced to cut one check so we can get a fresh head coach who is hungry to win?
And can Gragg even recruit revenues coaches? There’s no proof of that either. Although he did fire Genyk at EMU.
