Kevin Warren/B1G Evolution Story

Somebody pasted the differing philosophies of Kevin Warren and our very own Jim Phillips side by side.

JP is still espousing Northwestern values, whereas Warren compared the old school conference thinking to retailers that went bankrupt. Pretty interesting comparison. I wonder if JP regrets leaving NU at all.

Phillips clearly sees his leadership role as one that is charged with preserving and extoling the true virtues of college athletics.

Warren clearly sees his role as one to help his stakeholders change with the times or get left behind.

Neither are wrong.

Separately...for Phillips I see no reason for him to regret his move. Obviously these are turbulent times but he knew that when he took the job. He is a career-focused guy who wants to reach the pinnacle of his field (whatever that means). I think even in the worst case scenario where he takes the Larry Scott route of resigning with a relatively bad legacy, JP still carries a rep as being a solid gold athletic director and would be able to return to a job like that in a heartbeat, anywhere in the country, if or when he so chooses - not a bad backup plan.

I thought that we messed up when we let Phillips go to the ACC and brought in Warren, but it looks like Warren was a great hire. Phillips has a very difficult job with the ACC. He also looks stupid for having said no to the 12 team playoff and whether true or not, looks like he was flat out out-maneuvered/hoodwinked by Warren and the B1G.

I would say that's a function of their current situations. If Phillips were leading the B1G I imagine he would say something entirely different right now. The fact of the matter is the ACC is basically stuck in their current circumstances based on grant-of-rights and TV deals signed by his predecessor so he can't do anything about it. As a result, his best option is to talk about preserving the status quo, maintaining stability, and traditional college / student-athlete values. While taking very subtle shots at other conferences for making it a "zero sum game". If he were leading the B1G he would have the flexibility to pursue expansion, and be in a desired conference that many would want to join. As a result his stance would be very different.

I wouldn't confuse what he is forced to say to defend his league's current circumstance with what he would do and say if he were in an almost polar opposite circumstance as B1G commissioner rather than ACC. I usually like Stew Mandel but it's a pretty silly comparison in this case IMO. Like beyond being an overly reductive comparison, its highly misleading.

I still would have preferred to have Jim Phillips over Kevin Warren, but Warren's handling of the USC / UCLA move (whether or not they reached out to him first, which I've seen some folks use as an excuse to continue slamming KW and discount his part in it, attributing it instead to Gene Smith of OSU) and the follow-on from that (now being patient and letting things (ie ND) come to him) has been impressive and has improved his stature in my eyes. The handling of the Covid thing was still a total disaster, but acquiring USC UCLA and negotiating this next TV deal matters a lot more for the long-term future of the conference than bungling how to handle one wacky partial football season in the midst of a global pandemic. So if he gets this "right" (realizing it's never a binary yes or no) I would say this clearly outweighs what he did in 2020 when he was first getting settled into his seat.

Yeah, to use a poker analogy, Warren was dealt a full house and Phillip 10 high. It’s a lot easier to play warren’s hand.

color me as someone who is still skeptical of warren. The Covid response was beyond abysmal and saying yes to usc does not take much thought. I beleive Delaney was brought in as a consultant to negotiate the new right package so I feel confident that will go well.

I don’t love Nebraska’s former AD, a man (and a program) of many words and few accomplishments, trashing Warren. At least he did it on the record.

The article itself just reminded me that people who function in this "executive leadership" space (for the most part) are no dummies. Like many people, I took one look at Warren and thought, no college experience. Obviously people at the table making the decision were able to see a highly-effective leader who could transfer his skills and experience.

I would say the bad hand Warren was dealt with COVID is almost balanced out by the "gift" that was USC/UCLA knocking on our door. Really, he's back to even.

Delany's strengths were well-known and documented, so this article was also interesting in highlighting the details he left hanging out there to the conference's peril (no meaningful in-house counsel, HR, or IT)...but I guess those things were less worrisome given the big stick he carried.
