Being the hard core Wildcat fan I am I ventured on a long 20 mile road trip to see KJ play.
It was a treacherous journey on brutal Friday night weather that saw temperatures well in the 50's.
The missus and I procured sustenance in the form of delicious Thai noodles before the highly anticipated clash between the Ben Davis Giants and my local and oldest kid's high school, the Franklin Central Flashes.
My heart was divided, I was balls deep in enemy territory, and still tempted to cheer for them. They had a recruit heading to the friendly shores of Lake Michigan next year.
KJ had an impressive first half with 13 points, fueled mostly by 3 treys against zone, on 3-5 from deep, plus 2 baskets in fast break. I lost count in the second half, but think he scored (only) 4 more points (both fast breaks), before adding 3 more in intentionally fouling time. I wish Franklin Central did not play zone through mid second half as against zone is much harder to get impressions on a player. But I can't blame them, they were facing a stronger and faster opponent. Ben Davis is 2023 state champion. They lost key players but are still above my local Flashes.
Positives
- He seems to be a very good shooter from deep. I add the warm ups to the game impressions in saying this. Very fluid shot, very consistent mechanics, the ball goes through the hoop a lot
- He has hops, pretty good jump for a 6'3 player. Couple of finishes in fast break were athletically impressive.
- He seems to have a pretty impressive wingspan
- He appeared to be humble with teammates and coaches while being clearly the best player on the court
- He might be a true combo guard as when the starting PG went to the bench he played the point
Negatives
- For power conference basketball he is a short off the ball guard. He did not look short out there but, adjusted for competition, and impressive wingspan, he is still short. Here's to hoping for a growth spurt
- I did not see a lot of aggressiveness attacking the basket in the half court. Close to literally none actually. Adjusting for playing against zone, still not aggressive at all driving to finish or dish out for an open shot
- I did not see a single pull up jumper even if he was often guarded by smaller guys. Not a made pull up jumper, he did not attempt one at all
- His shot has a very low release point. Which is not compensated for by being fast. It is not a slow pull up, but it is not fast either
- The worst of all, and why I am guessing the only non mid major offer he has is from us: he is pretty slow. His first step is okayish, his shooting speed is okayish, but he does run slow and his changes of speed are slow and predictable.
These were my impressions. A sample of one game. And I know jack squat about high school basketball or how to evaluate players in that environment.
