He attended and played basketball at our local public high school. He contributed to building our new gym and regularly returned to the school to visit with his teachers and his coach, Greg Downer. Horrible news!

Just the other day I saw something in the news about a fan throwing an orange peel at Lebron James' son while he was about to pass a ball from out-of-bounds during a youth basketball tournament. The article talked about how James had his own game a night before and took a helicopter in. I just had a passing thought about how safe helicopters are for normal day-to-day travel, but I guess you have to be careful regardless of method of travel. However, I'm hearing that Kobe's copter was travelling in foggy conditions.

Yesterday all I could think about was how awful those last moments must have been. Would have been terrible by himself, but with his kid? He was for sure realizing what was going to happen, feeling hopeless that he could do nothing to at least save his kid. Awful.

Everglades NP uses helicopters to do a lot of their research. From talking with helicopter pilots in Everglades NP, part of the problem with helicopters and their safety record is that there are many pilots who don't know how to handle one in an emergency such as a total stall.
