Props to them. This is what A student section looks like. Can you imagine this at Welsh Ryan?

I'm having a hard time imagining it because the lower bowl would just be filled with UW fans or purple chairs.

I love my seats!!

However, I'd be happy to get kicked upstairs any day of the week if students made that the norm.

Their student section, with approximately 4000 seats, is half the size of our entire arena.

And they fill it.

So, with 4,000 seats for students, that is about 10.8%, At our full-time graduate and undergraduate attendance, we are talking about 1,729 students attending a game. It seems this season we get about 1/4 to 1/3 of that, and that includes the pep band, spirit squad, other student athletes being honored that evening, and Willie.

Wanna know why?

They were also the 14th ranked team in the country playing the 5th ranked team in the country.

You really shouldn't count grad students. For most of them, grad school is a full time job. Plus, most grad students hold their first allegiance to their undergrad school, not NU. So 10% of 8,500 seems about right.......

I wish we were pulling 850 students a game. That would fill up at least the Wildside. For some of the games this season, it's been 50-60 students when you exclude the band and spirit squad.

We should be able to 600 to 800 students to show up for the basketball games. One in 9 of our students should come support the team. I am guessing we had maybe 300 at the IU game? Almost every home game has been an exciting game so the "we suck" explanation is not a good one.

Umm, except for the fact that seats at MD are LIMITED. Just because 4000 kids go to games doesn't mean that's the cap on student demand. I'd bet Md could get 8000 students to go. Look at another example: Duke. You telling me only 10% of Duke wants to go to the games?

But never be surprised when NU supporters rationalize student patheticness, basic rules of market analysis be damned. Like using percentage of students attending at a sold out student section to peg the appropriate student attendance in a stadium with empty seats galore.

Grad school is indeed a full time job: most PhD programs do not want students doing other part-time work. I know I am a very rare exception: a grad student as loyal to NU as to UNL (his undergrad school).

Maryland has a little catching up to do with the big boys in football, but I figured they'd be a very good addition in BB, and it's helped them that the B1G isn't particularly strong at the top this year. Their women's team is dominating the league and will have an undefeated regular season unless our Wildcat women can stop them this weekend. B1G women's league has never been quite as strong nationally as the men's league.

Are you seriously comparing the product Duke puts on the floor in their on-campus area to NU's? A mile hike to the arena in -5F weather.......yeah, Lets Go Cats!!!

Stupor, in recent years Duke has occasionally had to sell student tickets to adults to fill the section because not enough students were showing up. Louisville has started overselling the student section because it wasn't filling up. I see Oregon play Pac-12 games with a few dozen students in the section. This is an issue at a lot of schools, even those with history.

The student section was full at Maryland for our game. Someone said the students were still out on semester break too.

The marketing department has to work out a deal with local businesses to give coupons for discounted food, clothing etc for students that attend the games- 2 for 1 pizzas at Lou Malnatis, 25% discount @Old Navy or similar. The businesses would love the added revenue and student traffic. Show your ID at halftime , get your coupon and support Evanston merchants

The Trib did a ranking of the student sections in the B1G and the 'Cats (not surprisingly) came in 2nd to last (next to PSU).

UMD's student section was not as highly rated as I would have thought, but still up there.
