I'm moving this conversation to the Rock because I don't want to publicly speak ill of any coaches less than a month out from signing day...but is anyone else's mind BLOWN that McPherson's name has come up from a credible reporting source (Rittenberg) about the WMU job?
I'll assume it's because he's coordinated our recruiting and our running game...? But...really? Who was our last truly successful back before JJ, and how much are JJ's numbers due to a spotty passing game and Fitz running a naturally talented tailback into the ground?
On one hand I'm thinking...take him. But then I start thinking about who Fitz recruits to take his place...as NU fans always like to swim in the bath water, I'm sure Louis Ayeni's name will come up, but 1) his resume at ISU doesn't make me want to jump at the opportunity of poaching him and 2) he's an associate head coach there, so a move to NU wouldn't be a step up.
Would love to be wrong but I see Fitz fishing in the MAC pond, or just going with Cole, who doesn't seem like a bad addition to the coaching staff but who has notably coached QBs and receivers. I know there are some who will argue it doesn't matter coaching one position to the next, but I'm still fearful of the "go for the bronze!" mentality of recruiting coaches. Is it that counter-intuitive to want to grab an assistant who has a record of developing more than one 1,000-yard back?
