More media attention for the Cats - ESPN pushing the narrative

It might be time for NU to make the NCAAs. While I love the attention, it makes me nervous. But this article is really good.

Three things:

1) Team will practice in Patten next year.
2) That Patten is not the Patten the first NCAA Final was host in, the former Patten is now Tech.

"In an interview a half century later, Hull, the guard on that 1939 Buckeyes team, recalled that historic day at NU.

"I remember that whole thing as a mess, confusion," he said. "We had never liked Patten Gym. Poor lighting. ...The tournament was run by the coaches the first two or three years, and if you want a successful business, don`t let it get run by any coaches." "

3) There are 12 remaining Big 10 regular season games not 11.

So that's what you get from a Ohio St, education.

Let's do this, Cats. Cubbies broke their jinx, now it's our turn.

Expectations matter to the players. to the opponents, to the fans, to the referees.

The more of this stuff we get the better.

Jay Williams weighed in tonight on PTI. He's biased because he's a big Chris Collins fan from his time at Duke, but he has the Cats IN the Tournament in his bracket right now......

I hope that the "new" Patten Gym has been renovated since my college days; otherwise it would be a fairly horrendous facility in which to practice. It was bad enough for intramurals....

I'm recalling that scene from Hoosiers where they measure the basket and lane in Butler Field House. As long as Patten has the proper dimensions, shouldn't matter. Get it done! The new facilities are coming...

We're really going to practice in Patten? I suppose it's easier to block off than SPAC, but man, that's an old gym.

I'm curious to see what Patten Gym looks like now. In the early 90s, I spent time there for indoor rowing/crew practice in the basement--there was a small room with a bunch of ergometers (rowing machines) just off the weight room that was filled with free weights and some Nautilus equipment. I also played some pick-up basketball on the ground-level basketball court from time to time, but it was often used for fencing practice/matches at the time.

If our team will practice at Patten Gym next season, I assume that they will install a new floor (or move the floor from WR) and add some coaches offices. I'm sure it will be much different from the Patten Gym I remember.

As much as it sucks for the players that they will have to play home games in Rosemont, it is convenient that Patten Gym is actually on campus--as opposed to having to go way up on Central Street every day for practice and shooting.

One more thing: I don't know if this is still the case, but in front of Patten Gym used to be the pick up location for the Shuttle Buses to take students to NU hoops games!

Good times. Go 'Cats!

In my time on campus, Blomquist would have been the better bet for a court, both from a space perspective and quality of flooring. Patten had its share of dead spots. More importantly, Patten courts had about two feet of space from the out of bounds line to the wall. Just like squeezing a football field into Wrigley could be dangerous if not done right, the same concern would apply here. Now this was with three courts running horizontally (have they changed it?). I would have to assume that they would reconfigure for 1 court to run the entire length of the space. I actually never saw that during the period of 1995 - 2005. I enjoyed so many hours of pickup games in Patten during my time there. Some of my best memories and friends, and a good healthy stress reliever from academics. And then of course the dingy weight room basement. I need to visit again.

By in the day (late 70's) there was a full court running N-S which was rarely used, but I suspect that it will be the practice venue rather than the 3 E-W courts. Here is a photo from probably just after it opened, because the key painted in the foreground is the old size which looked like a keyhole:

Both Patten and Blomquist are currently closed for renovations to make them suitable for practice facilities.

Here is a curious travel log with historical information about both Pattens and some additional pics

And doesn't SPAC have those weird rubbery surface floors? It seems better for the 'Cats to practice on hardwood, since that's what they'll be playing on during games.

Great pic! Thanks for posting! I enjoy hearing from all the alum generations on this board.

Wow, some amazing facts in this blog, Did anyone know that we played at ETHS from 1940-1952 because the new Patten lacked a regulation court? And that the front doors and statues at the new Patten are from the old Patten? Great stuff...
