Here it is. I didn't watch last nite's Michigan game. After watching essentially every moment of every game this season (and that of every season since 1987/my freshman year at NU), I couldn't take it any more. What did I watch? Reruns of the Big Bang Theory on TBS. To all of NU's players and coaches- please forgive me. For I have sinned. After losses in games like earlier in the year to Butler and ND. After losses to Indiana over the weekend. And the losses to the Illini. I feared the devil would give me a heart attack if I witnessed another debacle against the Wolverines. My wife sensed it and knew exactly what the problem was. So she kept checking the score on her phone. And she kept updating me with the score (against my wishes). So then, when 8pm central came around, she told me the game was over. But it wasn't. I turned on BTN on my cable. Then, before I could change the channel, I witnessed the most beautiful thing a person like me could experience (other than my daughter's birth and my wife). I saw the last play of the game. And I'll never forget it. Tap to Pardon for the win. And I saw all that I had to. And then I tried to go to sleep so I could get up at 4am for my job. That didn't happen until about midnite. But I didn't worry about being tired this morning. I woke up full of energy and happy. Work went well today. And I will never sin like I did last nite ever again. Moments like what we have had this year in NU and Chicagoland sports seem to indicate that God is coming around. First the Cubs win the world series. Then, a big NU bowl victory. Now, it seems our NU basketball team is going to the tourney for the first time. I feel very very happy right now. Glory be to the heavens, God or the universe- whatever it is that is making this happen. Right now, I am getting a very big bang out of all the fun I am having rooting for my favorite teams.

You are forgiven!

I did the same thing. I scheduled dinner to end by 8 so that hopefully when I checked the score I'd find out the final result and go to sleep.

Unluckily or luckily for me, I turned it on with 5 minutes left. My wife smirked and said why do you do this to yourself. When Pardon missed a few free throws as did Lindsey, I felt the usual futility that us Cat fans are so used to. But oh man that pass...and the finish. I'm pretty sure the whole apartment complex could hear me.

This is so far the best moment of my Cat fandom so far. I don't go as far back as most but nonetheless it is sweet. My baby boy is due in 2 weeks and I will be glued to the TV in the delivery room as he will be born into a world where Wildcats are winners!!!!!!!!!!!!

And he will be named Dererk?

I thought about skipping the game. The Cats have lost 482 games since I've been watching them. What's one more? After Indiana I didn't know if I could take anymore.

And then finally something turned on yesterday, after 28 seasons. I'm not going to be negative. I'm not going to be down. I'm not going to give up. I'm going to be Mr. Optimistic.

When the Cats lose #483, whether it's Sunday, next weekend, or next season, I will be at peace. It has been a great ride. And it's still going.

I was the same way my future in laws, my folks, future brother in law were all at my house and after the heart wrenching loss to IU, I could not bear to watch. We won and I'm getting married on Saturday. Fantastic week!!

Dude, I don't blame you. How much can one guy take? Lifer Cubs fan? Adult lifer NU fan? What else? Clubbed baby seal fan? 70s Tampa Bay Buccaneer fan?

Sooner or later, we all have to recapture sanity. It's part of being an NU fan - until now!! :)

If the closet were opened, I'm sure there would a few more CAT fans that need absolution.

Let none feel guilty. Especially yourself, who has shown dedication. NU fans are in a tough business.

Let's guess you'll watch the Purdue game?

Figrating, I will be glued to my television the entire game. I had season tickets for NU bb/fb for 20 years. But my Dad used to go to the games with me and he died in 2015. So I won't be there in person unfortunately. I've also been starting work at 430am too, so getting to games with an hour ride each way would be tough anyhow. I have gone to several bowl games with my wife though. If I can swing it, I am hoping to make it to the tourney's first game/or two. Hopefully, the airlines won't try to gouge us too badly. Another thread seems to think we won't be playing in Milwaukee or Indianapolis. I hope the game will be to a midwest town or someplace like Tulsa.

That's gotta be tough, especially those '90-'91 and '99-'00 seasons. However, you've made it through! Congrats on you guys essentially being an NCAA lock.

My little boy was born the morning after freshman Johnny Shurna's game-winner against Ohio State. He came four weeks early just to see the Wildcats dance... and then they didn't. But I had the same hope - that he would only know a world where the Cats were a powerhouse. Maybe yours will do the trick.

(My third came seven weeks early in 2013, just in time to see NU football lose in prime time to OSU. I blame her for the two seasons of bowl-less football that followed.)

I'm hoping for a March 12 birthday for your guy, and a tourney viewing party from safely within your own living room. Congrats to you!

Thanks!

We have a name but I suggested to my wife (also an alum) that we use Derek as the middle name. It was entertained for a nanosecond and rejected thereafter.

I'm decking the kid out in full Wildcat gear once he's out!

She rejected Derek, but perhaps you should now suggest Dererk. It's catchy.
