Hello Cat fans…longtime member, infrequent poster/commenter. But I thought many of you might be interested in my upcoming book “Eckie: Walter Eckersall and the Rise of Chicago Sports.” It’s part biography, part social history about a three-sport star at Hyde Park High School and Hall of Fame quarterback at University of Chicago in the early 1900s, who then went on to become perhaps the first sports-star-turned-sportswriter, as the Chicago Tribune’s lead sportswriter for almost 25 years.
While “Eckie” focuses on U of C, there’s plenty of Northwestern in the book too, including a recap of Northwestern’s stunning 0-0 tie with a heavily favored Chicago team, paving the way for NU’s first (shared) Big Ten title. Another Wildcat connection: Big Ten Network’s Dave Revsine (Medill ‘91) wrote a really nice blurb for the book’s back cover.
