And the basis for your statement about grad transfers is...?(This year's grad transfer ship has sailed).
We aren't recruiting one.And the basis for your statement about grad transfers is...?
Is there an official deadline that has expired?
If not, for as long as NU has an open scholarship and there are eligible uncommitted potential grad transfers the ship hasn't YET sailed.
Is that official? We aren't recruiting one.
Is that official?
I certainly have zero inside information...hence for all I know the coaching staff may have been trying to get one of them through admissions for weeks...At least 3 who have been mentioned in this site remain available as of this post, and could definitely help a team like NU, including Gonzaga's Alberts who did get a NU's offer out of HS. The other two were at some point committed as grad transfers to KU and BC but reverted back to uncommitted...any of these 3 would be FAR better for NU than carrying an empty roster spot through this coming season.
And the reason for that is ?
Yeah, I am sure CCC believes that carrying an empty roster spot is better, FAR better, for the NU team than adding someone with several years of D1 experience elsewhere. How could he not? It's totally obvious, RIGHT?No, CC has stated in interviews that he is not a proponent of graduate transfers and thinks it is being abused by schools to the detriment of mid-majors. He has said that he used a couple of graduate transfers to fill in gaping holes in the roster that existed during his first two years as coach.
Right. I am sure Alberts couldn't have possibly beat an empty roster spot at NU (even though out of HS he got an NU offer, among many others).Just FYI, Albers announced on Twitter today he is going to Long Beach State.
Maybe Johnny boy is coming back.Yeah, you MUST be right, Collins has NO clue how to manage his roster, UNAWARE that he has an OPEN spot. INGENIOUS!!
Lots of coaching staffs have no problem finding time for their full rosters (plus walkons if any). Not counting the "operations" guys, there are THREE assistant coaches plus the HC for thirteen player (plus a couple of wakons). It works out to about 3-4 players per coach....seems quite manageable, don't you agree? From the looks of things, it might be hard to find time for the 12 scholarship players we have now, plus Malnati, who is a quality walk on who didn't play last year.
FWIW, Indiana, Iowa and Minnesota are the only Big 10 schools who have used all 13 scholarships for the 2017-18 season, at least according to Verbal Commits.....so this season at least using all 13 is the exception rather than the rule.Lots of coaching staffs have no problem finding time for their full rosters (plus walkons if any). Then, there is the well-known injury bug, which can "reduce" the roster in a hurry, further freeing coaches time for the remaining healthy players.
Whatever the reasons for NU to carry an empty roster spot (if it indeed happens) this coming season, lack of coaches time for the 13th player is NOT likely to be one of them.

Starting now?It would be extremely difficult to get a grad transfer through admissions before fall quarter started.
Starting now?
There COULD BE an ongoing admission process that has not been publicized.
Or it could be done. Don't underestimate Collins. It would be extremely difficult to get a grad transfer through admissions before fall quarter started.

How sure are we that there is a spot available? This would have been Vasser's 4th year. As far as I've read, all reports that his scholarship is now available have been speculation. NU certainly isn't saying much about it.
i cannot recall a case where the NCAA punished a school by taking current scholarships away from students. Scholarship restrictions always seem to be forward looking. It would be unfair to punish a student for something the school did, wouldn't it?I think there is merit to this notion. My two cents, no inside information, is that NU may be purposely sitting on this schollie. We know JV has initiated a lawsuit and that his allegations include some accusations that would be considered misconduct. I wonder if NU sits on the schollie in the unlikely event that some day down the road, the NCAA reviews all that surrounded JV. If the NCAA felt that moving JV off the athletic schollie and replacing with an aademic schollie, NU skirted NCAA rules (not saying I believe this to be true, just free thinking...). So NU chooses to try to at least make sure that adding another schollie player does not become an unqualified roster member / too many schollies / forfeit all wins scenario. CCC has done a great job and NU appears situated to return to the NCAAs and maybe even contend in the B1G. If that was all subsequently vacated, it would be a big slap in the face. So, let the four year schollie expire unused and line it up for next.
I think he's saying that the NCAA could say NU moved JV to an academic scholarship in order to free up another basketball scholarship. If NU keeps one open and unused that argument doesn't work, so any risk of having to vacate wins etc. would be seemingly mitigated.i cannot recall a case where the NCAA punished a school by taking current scholarships away from students. Oh, I misunderstood.I think he's saying that the NCAA could say NU moved JV to an academic scholarship in order to free up another basketball scholarship. If NU keeps one open and unused that argument doesn't work, so any risk of having to vacate wins etc. would be seemingly mitigated.
Right. Can't be accused of a thing you didn't do.I think he's saying that the NCAA could say NU moved JV to an academic scholarship in order to free up another basketball scholarship. ....for the 2018-19 season. JV's eligibility is over then so no more question about whether or not his scholarship counts.NU has 2 more scholarships to use if they chose to do so
You may be talking about the 2018-19 year...this discussion is about the remaining 2017-18 scholarship (13th player).NU has 2 more scholarships to use if they chose to do so
There IS evidence that NU had at some point attempted to fill the last 2017-18 scholarship...For example, Georgetown transfer Akoy Agau was linked to NU (he eventually chose SMU)...He announced in early May after AJ's transfer into NU had been announced...by then (AFAIK) the only remaining NU schollie was the one freed up by JV.I think there is merit to this notion. My two cents, no inside information, is that NU may be purposely sitting on this schollie.
But there isn't any doubt that NU did that...the problem is that JV claims his non-athletic scholarship was worse for him (in some respects).I think he's saying that the NCAA could say NU moved JV to an academic scholarship in order to free up another basketball scholarship.
