This post is not really a rant but does not belong on the FB or BB boards

Tomorrow (Nov 27) if he were alive, Jimi Hendrix would have been 75 years old ! I was an undergrad at NU 1967-1971 and recall an informal campaign to change the name of the sports teams from Wildcats ( a name shared by many other schools/universities) to Purple Haze (arguably the most well known Jim Hendrix song). In fact in April 1972 the name Purple Haze won a non-binding student body poll and the name change was endorsed by Daily Northwestern. It will never happen but Purple Haze (also the name of an NU a cappella group) would be cool !

Despite this post ..GO (WILD)CATS.Hope they win their bowl game !

What percentage of the student body supported the change, would you guess?

Mass cultural moments seem so much more rare these days - or perhaps just more fleeting.

(I never got into Jimi...what was his *moment*? Was it the national anthem st Woodstock?)

What spurred the "campaign"? was it the song's popularity, or something more.

They all die at 27, unless they make it longer.

    Hendrix
    Winehouse
    Cobain
    Joplin
    Morrison

By Googling I discovered that 59% of students voted for the name change.

Jimi Hendrix was popular before Woodstock and Purple Haze was his best known song. If you you loved late 60s rock music in that era (when I was at NU) Jimi was iconic (and for "oldsters" like me nearing 70 years old he still is one of the greatest rock performers)

"All along the watchtower a Wildcat did prowl" must be a reference to Dyche Stadium,

One of our board members was a driving force behind the Purple Haze campaign. He can chime in if he wants.

A number of people were behind the campaign. There was a press release, a campus-wide flyer, a WGN radio debate with football coach Alex Agase, and after the overwhelming victory, a press conference covered by all of the major media at the time.

The point of it all had little to do with Jimi Hendrix. Rather, it was all about so many schools having the Wildcats nickname (e.g. Kentucky, Arizona, Kansas State, Villanova, etc.), and the fact that the name Purple Haze would be comparable to other nicknames that included the school's colors (e.g. Crimson Tide, Blue Devils, Green Wave, Golden Gophers, etc.). Those days of the Haze were fun times. Go Cats!

Wow, what a transformation, going from the Fighting Methodists, to the Wildcats, to the Purple Haze. What's next...?

If I recall correctly, Jimi Hendrix actually performed in a concert at Northwestern during the 1967-1968 school year. Can anyone confirm?
