NU among three finalists for Top 50 F Pete Nance

We may or may not land this kid but this is a pretty exciting conversation to be a part of.

We are going to land him. I can feel it.
Hope so as I have a feeling that he's going to be a good one. I wonder though, if he will redshirt and bulk up some. The picture makes it look like he needs some upper body work and at 6-8 he's only listed at 205.

Willy a redshirt is non-existent for basketball players, especially a top 50 player. He would come in and contribute immediately.

Is that a new rule? Benson was "shirting" before Pardon got hurt. Looks like Nance could use some bulking up.

My 2 cents: Kevin Durant looks like he could gain some bulk too! If we get Pete's commitment- start him as soon as he steps on campus if he is real deal! Players like him could help us reach the Final Four and win BIG championships!

Keep in mind we'd be talking about 17 or so months between now and "day one," so he has plenty of time to bulk up. I hope we get him.

We don't have full context, of course, but there's a significant enthusiasm gap in his comments about NU versus his comments about the other schools. In particular, "Michigan is in my top three, and they are indeed a program that exists".

I have a good feeling.

It's not a rule. It just doesn't happen with players of his caliber. A red shirt is rare in college hoops and usually only used with a project. Benson was not shirting, but Pardon was the year before.
Sure thought that Benson was taking a shirt but your probably right that it was Pardon I was thinging of. Still hasn't NU ever redshirted BB a player?

Benson was never taking a shirt. He played from day 1.

Pardon, on the other hand, was taking a shirt and it got burned when Olah went down.

Not to be a bummer but he's visiting Michigan last which usually means they're the favorite and on 24/7 there are three predictions for Michigan. Obviously that doesnt matter much cause we had like 5 predictions of Cormac but still.

Visiting last can indicate a favorite but I recall recruits cancelling future visits and committing and sometimes a schedule is just because of other issues.
Great to be in conversations like this if only for the press.

Sure we have (though I can't really remember who), but the point is that players of Nance's caliber don't redshirt. I can't think of any top 50 players that have ever redshirted (non-medical). Of course, we never really had any top 50 players since Evan Eschmeyer. Maybe Eschmeyer was redshirted, but I think he was hurt right off the bat as a frosh.

Pretty much at the great programs, only projects, usually big men, are redshirted. Someone like Dikembe Mutombo or Rony Seikaly who hasn't been in the game for very long.

For schools where one and done's are the norm, you want to cycle through scholarships ASAP. The great players are going to leave early anyways, so you mind as well play them. It isn't football. The guys who you would redshirt because they aren't ready physically typically aren't going to be great because of that extra year be better isn't likely going to make them better than the best freshmen you can bring in. The exception is with bigs who need to grow into their tall frames, and players who just started playing BB.

I still can't believe we nearly redshirted a guy who could grab 20 rebounds against any Big Ten team.

Ivan Peljusic redshirted, just as an example.

We had two solid centers and he was not going to get floor time Both got injured so no RS. Might be less RS going forward with the grad transfers being more prevalent.

Absolutely. It made sense given we had Olah and JVZ, and Pardon came in very raw physically. You can already see the changes in his physique in just two years. But things worked out well -- he got to play good minutes and practice against two skilled big men. Not the subject of this thread, but I think he could end up the best player on the team his senior year (over Law).
