Bates was more valuable (i.e. If you took Bates out of the equation, the Rose Bowl in 95 likely doesn't happen) and did more over his time. Mark was valuable but Bates much more.

I think there were several other numbers that were bigger toss ups- most notably 18 and 94.

Marcel Price for number 6 for sure! Warms my heart to see his name mentioned. You You have no idea how many wins he has brought us. Obviously the nd game where he tripped their QB behind lost to preserve our victory but...

Every time we have a big road game I don his jersey shirt and he always seems to be there for us.

Mrs Pulmocat won't let me wear it to home games. She thinks it's unseemly for some reason. I think it would be a great way to honor his legacy but she's the boss...

Maybe 27 too.
Where I would disagree:
9. I know he switched his number, but if he meets your criteria, Drake Dunsmore.
16. Are ties acceptable? If so, Jason Wright.
28. Jeff Backes, though slowed by injuries
35. The legendary Ben Johnson, who some feel is still on the roster.

Yes it was close for 27 between Covington and Matthew Harris, but Covington had a slight edge in stats. If Harris wasn't injury cut then he would a lock!!

Matthew was wearing #11 when he was forced to retire due to concussions.......

Matthew was wearing #11 when he was forced to retire due to concussions.......

That was my point- he was cut short and was smart to retire. Concussions are no joke. But he wore 27 for his three years of prime service. Criteria wasn't the number they wore the majority of their career/prime service.

Fun exercise. Two more votes for the Rose Bowl team:
46: Matt Hartl
95: Matt Rice

Such close calls- Hartl was one of my all time FAVs but Proby had the results. RIP Matt and I donate to The Leukemia and Lymphoma society in big part because of him! He was the prototypical fullback and feared nobody!

Little known fact- he also was reported to have had a mid-nineties fastball and was a damn good baseball player!

Dunsmore was close but Lane has career receiving numbers and was clutch and had a little more PT. He might very well be a 9b, just like Wright would be, but he was 18 (so was Bacher who could be 18c and hopefully when all is done, Clayton will be 18a)

Backes I don't think cuts it more than Vaughn but yes if injuries didn't keep him out, he could easily have been. He was a damn good athlete!

Amen- I am writing a book on the 95 team and there is a piece on Price and his family... MUCHO props to his mom and dad for forgiving the friend that shot him (it was an accident) immediately. As a parent that would be soooo tough especially since it was accidental. Bless you Price family.

Jeez; I remember Jason Wright as #18 . . . am I nuts?

If you allowed wearing the jersey one year, you could have Anthony as #1 and Clayton, Jason, and CJ as #18s a/b/c.

I vote Kain Colter as first #2.

We saw what happened Bates was taken out of the equation two years later.

Not sarcasm. Kain was NU's starting QB for the first bowl game victory in 64 years. His play on the field was absolutely as electrifying as Gissendaner's. At the Ticket City Bowl in Dallas, Colter was one of the few bright spots.

It may be unfair, but bowl victories and appearances help their case when attempting the impossible but enjoyable task of comparing players through history. That's why Dan Marino is the unquestioned Best NFL Quarterback of All-Time*.

*Who never won a Super Bowl.

Somewhere in the recesses of my mind rests the memory that Jason Wright wore 16 before he wore 18. But it may be playing tricks on me, in which case I should change my handle to "Not Well Cataloged."

Yes but it takes a lot to eclipse conference MVP.

Not sure why you started at 1990. Lotsa guys with their name on the stadium that played prior. Otto Graham (but he may have had > 1 number. Chris Hinton. John Kidd. Mike Adamle. And so on

recency bias. suppose this means that Derek Jeter is the best Yankee ever

Steve Schnur is great, but I'd give #10 to Zak Kustok.

10 was close but in my opinion Schnur should have been the BIG TEN MVP in 95... I think DA1 carried the majority of the load in 2000 and Zak was good in 2000 (in a down year for the Big Ten) but not so much in 2001... Schnur was solid as a gamer in 95 and 96 (and to an extent in 94)... Zak had better numbers in a more wide open system. Gimme Schnur every time

Could we please add Ray Wietecha, All-Big Ten center who anchored the Wildcat line in the '49 Rose Bowl win and went on to a distinguished career with the New York Football Giants. Sorry that I don,t know his number.
