TG just tweeted that the first regular season game will be November 8th versus New Orleans. A pretty underwhelming opponent, to say the least. Still, I can't wait!

Fake News. Turk assured us it was going to be against Duke. When has Turk ever been wrong?

From Teddy's story:

NU has opted to open with a mid-major because: 1) Any opponent is likely to sell out the newly remodeled (cost: $110 million) 7,039-seat gym; 2) The Wildcats want to christen the place with a victory; 3) The team has a bunch of new faces, with only six returnees who played extensively last season; 4) NU will play 13 high-major teams at home, including 10 from the Big Ten.

I hope New Orleans doesn't read that article. While it is a likely win, you never want to come out and say it that way.

Turk is most likely on the phone right now.
I really wonder if New Orleans can sell out WR2.0.
A clear disservice to fans who expected an upgrade in opponents after dropping serious money on overpriced seats.

Not having a big-time first opponent is fine, but that logic is dumb and Teddy shouldn't have bothered running it. If the whole point of building a new arena is to expect victory, launch a new beginning for NU basketball, and so on, why are we scheduling like losers? And the thing about "only six returnees who played extensively" ... we're going to have three seniors in the starting lineup next year and supposedly have one of our best recruiting classes ever. Just bad all around.

After the last W-R redo and downsizing, NU opened vs. ND.

I believe the Welsh Ryan opener after they redid McGaw in the early 80s was against Bradley. No need to schedule a "name" opponent when opening a brand new arena. This year's home schedule will be just fine with Ga Tech, Oklahoma, DePaul and TEN Big Ten games.

Back then Bradley wasn't quite as far removed from being good as they are now. Of course, they didn't choose to open against DePaul, so your point is taken.

Im sure Turk is disappointed. And I fail to see how the New Orleans Tigers are going to pack the place unless NU comps 2,000 fans. If they get 3,500 fans to see this then at least it will draw more than Brown or Robert Morris. $2,500 donation for more of the same washout schedule will only happen one time.

New Orleans? And we are touting Depaul?
High School!

Overpriced!

And they managed to lose Game 2 in the renovated WRA to Loyola, before beating ND in one of those riveting 40-36 barn burners......

you could be right as my memory isn't as good as back then. I do remember them giving away a key chain in the design of a ticket and could have sworn it had ND as the opponent. Anyone else remember that giveaway?

Bradley was a well-respected program back then (Remember Walt Frazier leading them to an NIT title when that still meant something back in the 1960s), especially locally. I still had the program from that game until I moved recently. The first game will be about the new arena, and NOT the opponent, so I really don't think that it makes much of a difference. After all, there are only 7,039 seats to fill, not 47,000.

That's right. NU beat Bradley to open WRA, lost to LUC by 2 (who went 20-9 and made the Sweet 16 the next season), then beat Notre Dame. Here's the full schedule from 1983-84.

Walt Frazier played for SIU.

You are absolutely right. Frazier led SIU to NIT title. Bradley did win the NIT when it was a legit rival to NCAA three times in the late 50s and early 60s and I believe Chet Walker was on a couple of those teams. Interestingly, they also won it in 1982 so they were certainly no cupcake for the opener of the new Welsh-Ryan.

The keychain had Bradley for the men, and USC for the women. There was a double header that day.
