My daughter (will be sophomore) was talking about this. I told her there's been talk of abolishing Greek system for 40 years.

"Out of the University’s 8,000 plus student population, about 20 percent of undergraduates participate in Greek life, according to the most recent Associated Student Government analytics survey."

I'm kind of shocked at the declining membership numbers. Weren't 40-50% of NU undergrads part of the Greek system back in the 90s?

Where is the tradition in college? I tried to join two frats at NU,but was too busy to do it. Still, a decent thing for schools.

I vote for the Rant Board. Not relevant to sports.

Well, before it gets moved to the Rant Board, which I cannot stomach, I will say here that if fraternities and sororities are eliminated at NU, that will end my financial relationship with the University.

Narrowing the experience is what college has become all about.

But if they get rid of frats and sororities, how do I know who the douchebags are?

I feel it’s time for the fraternity/sorority system to go. I’m a former Omega chapter Sigma Chi and while I made some good friends I don’t think the Greek system is good for the colleges. Too many examples of irresponsible acts leading to injury and death. It can’t be controlled. I think the Omega chapter was suspended again. The chapter at UCSD is in trouble and has been suspended as well. Too many reasons to be rid of them rather to keep them.

Maybe it’s more of an innocent statement of fact. Like maybe No Chores covers all the University’s sexual assault suits.

Yep, seriously. My fraternity and attending football and basketball games were the best part of my NU experience. Academics did not interest me until I got to law school. So, I will continue to support the athletic programs at NU, but not the academic mission of the University. My estate plan also will be be revised to benefit only NU athletic programs if fraternities and sororities are eliminated from the campus.

My inside source (a senior DG at NU) tells me that there will be plenty of deactivations -- although, in many cases, the true reason for doing so will be financially-driven, i.e. why pay dues when there will be few social activities this school year? But the chances of the system being abolished are slim and none, especially while Morty is president. He is a big fan of the Greek system, on a personal level because his daughter had a good experience, and on a financial level because its alums are some of the biggest donors and tend to be very supportive of the system.

Interesting, I'd like to hear more as a non Greek. For instance, I am an avid football fan but rarely give to the athletic dept. I give to other areas of the university regularly though. Why is the Greek thing so important?

The Greek thing was so important to me because of the friendships I made. A number of my fraternity brothers remain good friends to this day, and I graduated 55 years ago. While I was at NU, though, I had a number of friends who didn't participate in the Greek system, and would never be critical of anyone who chose not to go Greek. I simply enjoyed my experience, particularly participating on various fraternity athletic teams.

Ok. I had a similar independent experience. Lifelong friends, athletic teams etc. But you guys had GREAT parties. Also, from a distance, it seemed like the Houses had good academic networking (i.e. study groups) which would have been nice

It was supposedlyabout 80% in early 60s and then dropped significantly around 1970 when people started moving away from affiliations of any kind

As I indicated earlier, study groups were not a focus of my NU fraternity experience, but I was very good at partying! I was an English major, which helped me enormously in law school, since all exams were essay read and analyze tests. My college motto was never take a course where you had to know the answers.

My rock band made lots of money off your parties too! Getting paid to be at a good party was a nice benefit.

Yup. He can have a voice, right? Or should he be canceled and silenced as well?
