Interesting take on the costs of attending Northwestern as subject of a scene between Hawaii Five-0 Task Force Members Lou Glover and Steve McGarrett on this past week's episode of Hawaii Five-0:

From the Rant Board:

Northwestern was featured on this past week's Hawaii Five-0 show!

Principal member of the Hawaii Five-0 Task Force, Lou Grover (played by Chi McBride) announces to Detective Steve McGarrett that his daughter Samantha (played by Paige Hurd) "Went and got herself admitted to Northwestern."

While the show lead McGarrett attempts to congratulate Lou, Lou gets into a lengthy exchange about the cost of going to Northwestern. At one point Lou, the dad, states, "I won't see change for $150,000 - why that's more than we paid for our first house."

The scene opens with Lou Grover stepping into Steve McGarrett's office at Hawaii Five-0 headquarters. He is holding several cruise and boating magazines. As he hands them to McGarrett he says, "I won't be needing these anymore." He then goes on to lament how his boating, or more to the point dream of boating, days are over. He states that, "My boating dreams now are scuttled." McGarrett counters back pointing out that with that Northwestern education Lou's daughter will land a good job, make lots of money, and he should be able to "guilt her" into getting anything he wants. Lou wryly smiles, and then says, "Yeah, but by then she will be in the same position I am in and she will be paying for her own kid's education."

All in all it is a fun scene relating to the costs of higher education. It reminded me of a conversation that I had with another dad as we shared our "sacrifices" in putting kids through college. He noted that each year when he got the tuition bill, "It was like buying a new fully loaded truck or SUV and pushing it off a cliff."

FWIW, a Theatre/Media Major who is a student at Northwestern had recently interned in some type of production capacity on the Hawaii Five-0 TV Show when she was home for the summer. I guess it is within the realm of possibility that she was the inspiration for the Northwestern inclusion.

(As I was going down the elevator in our Hawaii Kai condo building I ran into her mom who was transporting some Northwestern apparel and other items of her daughter's from their condo unit - which led to the conversation regarding Northwestern and the Hawaii Five-0 intern position.)

It's not the old "Book it Dano!" It is just the same as all the NCIS types of show that are so popular now.

Correct. Its demographic has actually been expanding with more inclusion into the young adult sector. The consequent increased ratings became a key factor in the show being recently renewed for an 8th Season, which again bests the other most recent Hawaii Filmed TV Series, LOST that ended after six seasons.

Unrelated to any of the above, here is my daughter-in-law in her (brief) speaking role playing a "Female Doctor" as she will be appearing on a Hawaii Five-0 episode likely to air on Friday April 28th or May 5th.

(She is expected to appear in a scene along with Lori Petty and/or Scott Caan. The upcoming episode features guest star Lori Petty whose role is that of a nurse taking care of a comatose witness from the final case handled by Scott Caan's character before he joined Hawaii Five-0. Petty is known for her role, along with Madonna, in "A League of Their Own," and Caan was a member of the "Oceans Eleven" and "Oceans Twelve" teams.)

Wow, Yunji is your daughter-in-law, Alaskawildcat. What a small world! I know three of her former co-workers at KITV very well. There are only one or two degrees of separation in TV news.
