OT: "Hate Will Never Win" in Lincoln

I already thought kinda highly of Miles and the Nebraska campus community in general; this only furthers that.

All this over one self-proclaimed white nationalist student who made a video. It would be better to ignore him; this just increased his publicity by 1000%, which is exactly what he wants. It brings attention to him. I wouldn't have even known he existed had Nebraska not worn those shirts.

Good point, Feral. Hadn't thought of it that way, but it's hard to argue that. See, this is a perfect example of why I hang out on the boards here. They say it's best to surround yourself with people who are smarter than yourself. Fortunately (?) for me, those are easy to find.

This is a real issue on campuses across the U.S. Especially state university's. My son's school in Colorado is dealing with the same thing right now and the president has been very aggressive in organizing against it.

How do I say this. The Millenials don't have a complete sense of history and are susceptible to ideas and messages that boomers roundly rejected.

Good for Nebraska basketball.

This is my opinion as well. The message is for the local community, and I think it's important that the local community see it.

Ricky Birdsong was murdered the summer after my freshman year, and the white supremacist whose follower committed the act appeared on campus during my sophomore year. (I don't really recall the circumstances. There wasn't an *appearance* - he just kind of stood along Sheridan with a kid in a trench coat from Deerfield High School.)

We organized against it and did some sloganeering and shouting and at least one local news station covered it - but the fact that he got some publicity mattered far less than the fact that we agreed as a community that we didn't want him around.

Not sure that's right in this case. The debate is about Nazi's on campus. Godwin's law, IIRC, is when you equate a non-Nazi topic with Nazis.
No, Godwin's Law pertains to comparisons to Hitler, specifically. To be fair, you didn't mention Hitler, but the connotations are there by mentioning Nazi Germany. By comparing this lone student to Nazi Germany, you're giving him much more attention and importance than he is due. I never would have known he existed, and now he has more people checking out his video and hearing his message. If only everybody had ignored Hitler and nobody heard his message.

Perhaps, in this case, you lost the argument by bringing up Godwin's Law because it was already a discussion about on-campus Nazis.

In regards to "if only everybody had ignored Hitler".... you are aware that this is the exact opposite of what is broadly promoted? That with some people, from time to time, the idea of "we must never forget" is invoked?

Because what modern America has proven is that nutjobs just go away and cause no problems if we just ignore them? Not so much.

Now back to basketball.

Right, like liberal nutjobs trying to assassinate Republican congressmen on a baseball field.

I don't even know if he's a Nazi. You're the first person in the thread who used that word. Based on the thread, I know he's a White Nationalist. The KKK are also White Nationalists, but they're not necessarily Nazis. Both are terrible, but they're not the same.

I know that Godwin's Law pertains to Hitler, who was the head of Nazi Germany. You invoked a Nazi Germany comparison to somebody who might or might not be a Nazi, based on what I know in this thread.
