During the Big Game between Stanford and Cal Saturday, Cal scored a TD with :54 left to increase its lead to 26-17. I turned to he guy I share ST’s with and said Cal should take a knee on the PAT. He told me I was crazy. Not paying attention to me, Cal kicked the point. After a long back and forth during the ensuing commercial break, where I explained that a bad snap or blocked kick returned by Stanford outdoor have made it a one score game, he said he agreed with me but, “it ain’t ever going to happen.”

Is anyone aware of a team actually taking a knee on a PAT at the end of a game with a 9 point lead?

I would still try for the point to make it 10. Depending on time outs, :54 could till be enough time for them to get a TD and FG with a big kick return or something. Worst that happens with a blocked PAT is they return it for 2, which is still a 7 point game. Actually may be the best gamble to go for 2 to make it 11 as that would require TD + 2pt + FG.

Should have added Stanford had used all its timeouts. After kickoff, Stanford over the ball to Cal 44 with 6 seconds left, spiked it and kicked a 61 yard FG as time ran out. On Bart going home, heard a Stanford fan say it was stupidest call he had ever seen. I had to point out it was their only chance at that point, and he thought I was crazy.

The best I can do is, in 2017 Penn State scored a td on the last play of the Iowa game, to go up 21-19. Penn State ‘took a knee’ to prevent a blocked extra point & score, which would have tied the game.

So Penn State is now, no longer, the Knights who say...Knee
