Sadly this weekend saw the passing of Gavin MacLeod known to my generation as Murray Slaughter on the Mary Tyler Moore Show and the Love Boat Captain Merrill Stubing during its 9 seasons from 1977 to 1986 and known to the present generation for his promotional role as Spokesperson and "Global Ambassador" for Princess Cruises. Such NU alums as Shelley Long, Robert Reed, McLean Stevenson and Peter Coffield all had guest appearances on the Love Boat series.

Fittingly, Gavin who passed away this Memorial Day weekend was also a veteran, although ironically he had been an airman in the United States Air Force rather than a ship captain.

I assume many feel a personal connection having grown up looking up to the TV star. In real life he was an admirable person as well. Just this past week my son was telling me that he had experienced a memorable conversation with someone whom I might remember. He was with Gavin MacLeod helping him in conjunction with a hospitalization. Although confronting various medical issues, the patient was in good spirits and was able to engage in a discussion sharing thoughts and experiences. I note in reading his bio, that Gavin MacLeod maintained close friendships there in the Palm Desert area with past costars including the actors who played the doctor and the bartender on the Love Boat, with actor Tim Lange (the Love Boat bartender) stating, "Gavin was wonderful." Reportedly he was the "longest serving celebrity spokesperson in brand partnership history" a fact that probably is of notice to the Northwestern Kellogg grads.

I guess my primary personal connection to the celebrity was getting to sail on one of the Princess Cruise Ships that had a Love Boat connection. Oh, and I guess in a Kevin Bacon sort of connection, we both appeared on episodes of Hawaii Five-0 although his appearances were on the initial season of the original series where he played drug pusher "Big Chicken" and I didn't show up until the series reboot as a Background Actor playing a "Costumed Party Guest with Upscale Car."

Gavin MacLeod has sailed onto other shores, but his time spent plying our earthly seas will continue to be fondly remembered.

Kevin Bacon's dad, Ed, was one of my first year architecture teachers--a famous city planner in Philly. Now I also get to watch his granddaughter Sophie on Mare of Easttown.

Hey Alaska, I read that your grounds were shaking this weekend. Assuming you and yours made out ok?

Thanks for checking. Fortunately damage was minimal.

FWIW I happened to be holding my cell phone when it started so I activated the video feature. Most dramatic was the sound that was recorded as the roof shook. It began with the crash of a picture in a frame falling over and concluded with a balancing Curious George on top of the bookcase swaying and the weights of the adjacent cuckoo clock wildly swinging.

The local NBC affiliate liked the footage enough to include it on last night's news broadcast and then I was interviewed today for a follow-up feature that just aired on this evening's news.

Here is a linked below summary of tonight's story with quotes from me comparing the present earthquake with the "Big One" I experienced in 1964. Pictured is the news anchor who interviewed me and a graphic relating to the present earthquake.

Here is an excerpt from the written summary linked below:

"ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - More than 150 aftershocks have followed Sunday night’s earthquake, but scientists said the quake itself was not an aftershock of the Nov. 30, 2018 magnitude 7.1.

According to the United States Geological Survey, Sunday’s quake was a magnitude 6.1 about 45 miles North of Chickaloon, with an epicenter below the Talkeetna Mountains. The shaker left many people in Anchorage wondering if it was a result of the November 2018 quake, but Alaska Earthquake Center Director Michael West said it was too far from the 2018 epicenter and is considered its own earthquake.

“I was sitting at home, and I was just getting ready to go to bed,” Dale Walther said. “The earthquake started, I clicked the video button.”

Walther, who is from Anchorage, caught Sunday’s quake on camera.

Walther said he was in Anchorage for the 1964 magnitude 9.2 earthquake and the 2018 magnitude 7.1.

“Every time there’s an earthquake like this, the first thing that comes to mind is having been in the 1964 earthquake here in Anchorage,” Walther said.

Sunday’s earthquake was almost like reliving the 1964 quake, he said.

“I felt a little bit afraid, a little bit concerned, and a little bit relieved that it didn’t continue as long as it might have,” Walther said."
