Why was Pardon out down the stretch and OT? He would have made a few of the missed putbacks.

Also anyone notice the dramatic improvement in Falzon's game. In the last 4 games he has really stepped up his game and not just shooting threes. I like him driving the lane and rebounding.

Absolutely can question why Pardon didn't get more time down in the stretch, but to me Collins liked what JVZ was bringing defensively, and decided to go with that. As explosive as Pardon can be offensively, he needs some work on defense still. I think tonight Collins just saw more value in playing JVZ. He went defensive all night, pretty much not playing Taphorn at all and giving Lumpkin and JVZ a lot of minutes.

We lost the game in part because we didn't play Pardon late in the game or in overtime. Van Zegeren split FTs twice. He also didn't finish on a play that Pardon might have had an and-1. Van Zegeren is a good defender and rebounds well, but we needed an offensive finisher in OT. McIntosh is a good player but he is not a consistent finisher on the drive--yet.

Did you happen to notice how our 2 seniors did? let me help, Olah = 0 and Demps was not much better.

Look, I love Pardon as much as the next person on this board, but Pardon is shooting 53% from the line in conference compared to JvZ's 57%. Pardon is certainly our best offensive threat at center right now, but it seems Collins chose defensive ability over offense for OT.

I disagree. In OT, you need good defense over good offense. If Pardon is missing assignments in that pretty complex switching zone they play, then it creates easy baskets for the other team. You can't afford that in one possession games down the stretch.

Easy baskets-like the one Maryland scored in OT ?

Yeah but on the other hand we couldn't score and I'm pretty sure you have to score to win.

I don't think they scored any easy baskets in OT. Trimble made two beautiful passes that very few players could make that led to two key scores. There were no easy hoops in that OT.

Yep, and that is the problem with NU at the moment. We have very few two-way players. Macintosh can score and plays serviceable D. Falzon is a scorer and his D is starting to come around (though he fouled out - which was a killer). Demps used to be a good two way player, but we know that is not currently the case. Law probably would have been (man, how many times do we NU fans have to say what if?). Olah is neither until he gets healthy. What does that leave you?

I consider a layup an easy shot

The OT was lost when Falzon fouled out and Lumpkin and JVZ were on the floor at the same time. NU was playing 5 on 4 or 5 on 3 on offense. JVZ was huffing and puffing and winded. Pardon needed to be inserted to run pick and roll with McIntosh. The excellent point was that NU's juniors and seniors have limitations and do not have the athleticism to adjust their games. Vic Law adjusted his game about midway through the Big 10 season last year. Falzon's game is evolving and developing. Both players are 4-star top 100 athletes. McIntosh and Pardon have the athletic ability to adjust during the season and in games. Add 4-star Rapolas and Benson next season with a (hopefully) explosive shotmaker in Brown maybe there won't be as much pressure on McIntosh to make every play and he becomes not as turnover prone with 2 minutes or less left in the game.

I may be missing a play, but all of the layups I remember Maryland getting were due to just phenomenal plays by Trimble. So, yes, I agree a lay up is an easy shot, but they didn't get lay ups because someone missed an assignment and left a guy wide open. They happened because one star made a couple great plays and just beat his man.

A layup is a layup. If JVZ could not prevent the layups, it would not have mattered if Pardon was in the game and his scoring ability is much better

JVZ couldn't stop the layup because he rotated over to pick up Trimble who penetrated into the paint (twice). I agree..... Pardon could have rotated over and left a man wide open just the same. So, the decision to go with JvZ over Pardon didn't end up working because Trimble elevated his game. But, I understand the logic behind the decision going in and agree with it. It just didn't work. So... hindsight is 20/20.

Collins could have substituted offense for defense by possession as Maryland did with Stone, no? Seems pretty simple, put in JVZ when Stone came in and Pardon when Stone came out and we had the ball....

+1. During Pardon's last five minutes in the game, Maryland scored at will. During the last 4 1/2 minutes of regulation when JVZ was in there, Maryland had a grand total of ZERO baskets. It was the correct decision for Pardon not to be in the game.
