The lack of white smoke from the FitzMahal indicating our new DC makes me wonder if Fitz's choice is still coaching in one the bowl games to come. Is this a reasonable leap of logic or just mental masturbation to fill a boring December day?

B.

It's stupid, coaches change all the time. What coach in his right mind would say "I'll work for you but don't tell anyone for 2 months".

Fitz is still thrashing around in the dumpster

Not a great situation for anyone is ready to move, without improvement Fitz is on at most a 3 year performance plan.

If he ends up promoting from within, presumably there is no rush to announce it. Maybe there aren’t many better options that are available to him given the situation in Evanston.

Along the lines above, I have another play to speculate: say PF was fired next year or thereafter following more poor performances, what would the AD do? On the be careful for what you ask for hand, the new AD and prez don’t inspire confidence of working hard to bring the program back up. On the other hand, I imagine there would still be a lot of very angry alum pissed the golden boy was launched. One way to pacify those masses and bring energy back into the program would be a great hire - like not your normal, expected NU hire.

I suspect both could happen - but which way would you all think it would roll? Personally, I think by that time, Ryan’s interest will have moved towards the Chicago Bears of Arlington Heights and the university will thrust the FB program deeper into the new Darker Age.

Have you thought about becoming a science fiction writer?

🤷‍♂️ And how would you describe the last four years considering the dark ages that occurred 30 years ago? Anybody think it would ever get so bad? Anybody think that school would ever go to a rose bowl? Win a conference? Win bowl games?

I have to say that I left a campus w a terrible AD and terrible sports. I rooted and endured my B1G family through only a few seasons before Barnett. Then hoops started to swing up.

Like pure sci fi, nobody saw NU revenue sports being worth a damn. Suddenly, we have a respected FB program. Then we dance after years of NITs.

Yet, remember, this school was 1-0 going into the rose bowl and I think won a natty in mbb before the dark ages. So the NU pendulum swings far and unpredictably. Does that make my supposition so crazy?

If he promotes from within, it communicates that all is well. Ohhhhh, baby.

just curious...why would Bates leave Pitt for NU? Is he unhappy there? are we doubling salary....I like him and I like his ability to recruit the East Coast as well as Pennsylvania and Ohio....but why would he make a lateral move. Also he is 62 and is from the Pittsburgh area.....As much as I would like it....not feeling it.

I think Fitz has been waiting for Pitt to play today to rehire DC Pitt, Randy Bates. He was a solid LB coach at NU and has done relatively well at Pitt.
Actually, this is really interesting.

As for whether he would want to come back or not, I imagine there are many x factors in play that we know nothing about...Bates won an ACC title with Narduzzi at Pitt last year and maybe possibly feels that's all he can do there and would like to win a Big Ten title to go with it. It's also not that hard to imagine Fitz being a better boss than Narduzzi - he was at NU for what...a decade? Will assume he wasn't miserable the whole time.

I believe at this point it's humanly possible that NU might actually pony up the cash for a DC and outbid Pitt.

Pitt to NU is not a lateral move—it is a step down. A big one…

Why can't Fitz be his own DC? He was a two time award winner at lb and over the last decade has been exposed to a great D scheme ( Dr Hank) anda putrid one (late lame ted JON). Surely he can do the job.

I think for the past two years, he has been.

Not to mention a solid recruiter

Bates for what, a decade under Hank? He'd be perfect. I thought he should get the job last time. It would have been a dream hire. From mentor to long time student. Almost makes too much sense (although maybe last time Bates demanded something so crazy like the highest DC salary in CFB or something that only now would we consider?).

And as I have mentioned before I think Lance Anderson (formerly at Stanford) would be fantastic.

Whenever his name was brought up in the past, his health was always cited as a limiting factor.
