MSU head coach Tom Izzo

We needed the win. Don’t get me wrong. But they deserved to win. They outplayed us for two-thirds of the game…

It was the Northwestern we thought we’d see all year….that is a good, well-coached team.

For us, the defense let us down…Your defense is supposed to travel…we were poor in the first half…they made some incredible shots…To shoot like they did, 60 percent in the first half and 11 in the second is unbelievable.

That matchup zone they play is really effectively…

MSU crowd: I appreciate that. I would say NU fans…part of changing the culture is changing the fan base…this team deserves to have sellouts of their own.

How much was NU, how much was MSU in the second half: I don’t know if they got cold or got back to normal. Maybe they got tired with McIntosh out of there….That’s one of our pluses, we have some depth…Combination: our defense was better, their offense was worse.

Sexual assault investigation: I’m not going to talk about that. President Engler said as much as we can say about that. My focus is on my team…blah, blah, blah.

Follow up question: I will take any basketball questions. I appreciate the question.

Winning a game like this: There can’t be a much better comeback then the one we just had….This might be the greatest comeback…

Goins vs. Bridges in the second half: Goins can play a big, as well as a guard. That’s why we played him more than Bridges. We didn’t do a good job preparing for the zone…

Halftime speech: I didn’t go off. I must be getting old. I just told them I was disappointed with our defense. I said we were going to guard better and chop this thing down in five-minute increments. I’m ecstatic with the comeback. We showed character…Nobody at Michigan State has been down by 27 and won.

Why NU isn’t where it is: Playing in a facility like this is one of the reasons they haven’t had the season we thought they would. In fairness to Chris, that’s difficult.

How much of your time being pulled in different directions (because of investigation): It’s been challenging, but that speaks about those players…Likes what Steve Kerr did with a player-coached team. I’ve done it a lot of times.

Talking in huddles in second half: When we cut it down to 16 at the 14-something mark…We’re making progress, can’t get it back all at once…defense dropped off of Cassius for whatever reason…We were getting good shots, but we were locking down defensively…They were fired up…Some different guys were talking…It was Cassius, it was McQuaid…Jaren Jackson was really into it. It was good to see.

Chris Collins

Difficult loss. Proud of my guys today. Only eight scholarship players, guys playing out of position…We got a little bit fatigued and foul trouble was an issue…It was tough for us. They started making a run and we had reserves in there.

Still, we had a wide-open 3 from Skelly. We had a great play set up for Dererk for a dunk and it slips through his hands with 40 seconds left.

Depth: We got a little winded. We only dressed eight scholarship guys. I was proud of Anthony Gaines. He showed today what’s to become with him…He’s a big part of our future…I thought our effort was worth of winning.

Emotions of game: We got off to such a great start. We were shooting, executing incredibly well…Early in the game, the ball was moving, we were getting open shots, the ball was moving…They ratcheted up the intensity…Foul trouble made it really difficult…We hung tough and got some stops yet…Your emotions have to stay steady.

Foul on Pardon: I’m not going to dispute it. I couldn’t see it. Gene’s a great ref…But that’s the kind of call that makes or breaks you.

MSU’s depth: Look at the box score. They have a lot of guys who played. We didn’t. When you have two Top 10 picks, you’re a good team…Cassius has turned into an incredible point guard.

First half make you think what if? I’m beyond that what if…I’m just trying to finish strong…

Powerless feeling: I was trying to give our guys confidence…You know that happens at times…I was trying to relax the guys…We had a couple toilet-bowl shots, we missed some open shots…We executed some things out of timeouts…We only had three field goals in the second half…When you’re tired and you’re not scoring, it makes you more tired.

BMac’s return: I hope so. He’s in quite a bit of pain with his shoulder. It’s a day to day thing.

First half: We changed some things because we didn't have McIntosh...We shared the ball, we got hot there...I felt like Vic couldn't miss...

First half vs. second half: We cut hard, we were relentless...Second, we were stagnant...Personally, I took a lot more difficult shots...We got tight.

Get tired? I feel good. I played 40 minutes, but I could still play more. I'm not going to use that as an excuse.

On Gaines: (Looks down at scoresheet) Shit. (Funny.) He had 10, four and five. Freshman plays the best he's ever played and it's against Michigan State.

First time in a long time all five of us have clicked. We played together. It was fun.

That first half was really fun. Makes you look forward to next year when we have a fresh start in a new arena.

Exactly right.

Listening to Collins' comments about BMac, it sounds like he may have played his last game at NU. Hope I'm interpreting it incorrectly.

One thing that Izzo could have mentioned is that the Cats were missing #1 and #2 point guards. That’s a challenge against any serious opponent, but when it’s against the #2 team in the USA, well... what are the odds that you can even make it competitive? (Which we kinda sorta did).

Those shoulder injuries that involve a collision from the side on the upper arm while the arm is outstretched are often catastrophic. It happened to me playing rugby, and I missed a year. It happened to Scott Rolen in a playoff game where a baserunner ran into him as Rolen was moving in and to his left to field a bouncer. His career was never the same. I imagine BMac has a pretty significant sprain—something that could easily require a few months.
