People around here are pissing on Fitz for "taking the blame for the loss." It's a damn press conference. He's required to do it. He's not going to dump on his players at a press conference.

I'm sure he said something different behind closed doors.

Well, Fitz and his staff need to take a good share of the blame for a poor game-plan and play-calling.

Hope he appoligized to the NU kid who got targeted by the Michigan head hunter and then Fitz shook the offenders hand. Why Fitz why?

Uh, because he wasn't "headhunting" him? What do I win?
He got kicked out of the game for targeting, isn't that considered head hunting? Just give me any reason Fitz would shake this guys hand, any.

Because technically he may have been subject to a targeting call, but it was clear that there wasn't an intention for illegal play or hurting the player.

I think Fitz shaking the kid's hand (or put better, the kid offering to shake Fitz's hand as he was heading towards the exit, which was appears to have been behind the NU bench) is what college football should be all about. S

Looking at the replay, it is clear that the kid should have been tossed under the so-called 'targeting' rule. Whether the kid actually meant to hurt our guy (I think it was Vitale) is unclear. In those cases, you have to give a kid the benefit of the doubt.

As for what the recruit said (as mentioned by Shakes), read this: http://northwestern.forums.rivals.com/threads/heres-some-good-news-about-saturday.10922/

Sorry but you don't want your HC shaking hands with an opposing player who just "targeted" a nd injured one of your players. You could tell him to get lost or at least ignore him.

I have no comment on whether Fitz should have shaken his hand or not. But I was surprised he was not flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for going to the NU bench and through their sideline to get to the locker room. Isn't that a major no-no. When you are disqualified from a game, the protocol is to go to the locker room along your sideline. I suspect that if this had happened in an Alabama-Auburn or Texas-Oklahoma game, there would have been a brawl when he came into the opposing team's bench area.

In Michigan stadium, there is only 1 tunnel and it's on the visitor's sideline. There is no other way to get there.

Sheesh, did you even watch the play? It was not intentional. Vitale immediately reentered the game, so he was not injured, and, even if he was, there was no intent to injure.

Shakes is correct.

If nothing has changed in 40 years, both team locker rooms share the same hallway (entrance ramp) on the same side of the field. In fact, the doors to the home and visitors locker room are 10-15 feet apart on opposite sides of the entrance ramp. A player could easily "penny" the locker room door of the home team shut in seconds.

I'm amazed there haven't been brawls between teams going up the ramp to and from the locker room. The coaches must coordinate when each team uses the entranceway.

I saw the play and felt it was a cheap shot. He accelerated into Vitale well after the ball had been tipped. Refs also saw it that way.

There might be cases where I'd agree and maybe Fitz would too but I think the coaches know what kind of game and player it is. If that guy were known as a cheapshot artist or dirty player Fitz would know and if the game was going that way in general Fitz would know. If the kid said< "sorry about that coach, I didn't mean to hurt anyone." Fitz should acknowledge that kind of gesture.

I don't know if it was intentional or not but I think it was a great call. It looked like targeting and with the game out of reach, it was a good time to enforce the rule that has a difficult consequence. It sends a message to everyone.

I don't know why I'm suddenly typing in this font.

Sure did and the refs were watching also and called the hit late and helmet to helmet correctly. if you don't think Vitale looked dazed after that hit, then there is nothing left to discuss.

Good grief. Fitz shook his hand because he DIDN'T THINK he was targeting Vitale. Whether his interpretation is correct can be debated, but not Fitz himself. Fitz would NEVER have shook his hand if he believed he was actually targeting one of his players. End of debate.

Help me here. Why did Fitz think he was exiting the game? Oh, maybe to use the bathroom.

He thought he got raw deal, willy. It's called sportsmanship. Whether he is wrong or right about the player's intent is not the issue here.
