Im watching the hall of fame game because.... It's at least football. Makes me wonder if I'd rather watch the likes of Alabama murdering Eastern West Virginia State University or a completely meaningless NFL game where the starters come out in the first qtr... Or not even play.

The game that counts in the standings. Always.

This. Plus, in the FCS game, you're going to see Alabama (or whoever) actually running some of their system using their starters for at least the entire first half. NFL teams don't like playing starters and don't even come up with actual game plans for preseason games.

I think college coaches save more of their system for real games while NFL coaches use more of their system to see the backups run it.

I voted FCS games because there is always a chance Michigan loses to Appalachian State

There's a good chance my interest lasts less than 10 minutes in either case. Three minutes if it involves Savannah State or the Jaguars. However give me McNeese State vs. Nebraska, Georgia Southern vs. Florida or Applachian State vs. Michigan and it becomes pretty obvious.

The most entertainment I get at an NFL preseason game is a drinking game with my buddies on who can first name the college of the guy who just made a catch. The beauty of that game is rarely losing.

I realize this was not the point of the topic, but I'd actually love to see FBS teams scrimmage against FCS teams the week before the regular season starts - for exactly the same reason the NFL hosts preseason games.

Stands to provide universal benefit - tune up against opponents who are not just teammates on the scout team - could easily establish that the win or loss will *not* impact regular season standings, many FBS teams would profit, many would break even, and those in danger of losing money or terrified of injuries could choose not to host a game. Presumably, FCS programs would be paid a fee that they will soon lose as FBS teams phase them out of the regular season schedules. NU could easily charge $20 to get into the game, the standard $30 to park, $4 for a Pepsi, etc., BTN could broadcast it, journalists could write about it, etc., etc.

That is an interesting idea, but I feel that most schools already have that sort of exhibition in the form of their spring game. Unlike most other sports which have at least one exhibition game in their season, football has a much more physical and punishing nature.

In other words, I think an FBS/FCS exhibition game would be great for the fans, but not for the players.

However, I would MUCH rather watch an FBS/FCS game over ANY NFL game. Give me college sports any day of the year! This coming year, the games I get to will be D3 vs. D3 (I'll be working at UW-Stout.)

I would see something like this happening in August rather than take the place of a spring game. If you use it like an NFL pre-season game, most of your starters aren't seeing the field - it's a chance for a final audition for toss up starting jobs and to work out the depth chart. In this respect, it's no impact on the starters but actual playing time for deeper players who may not get a chance to see the field for a while.

Your forgetting that NU doesn't allow fans or even the press to watch pre-season practices.

Anything like this would represent a seismic culture shift across all of college football. Besides that, I think NU would use a game like this less to test plays/formations and more about getting actual game reps for their backups.
