Purdue goes down

Edey looked exhausted the last ten minutes and his play was really affected. I didn't watch the game earlier.

Purdue couldn't hit any 3's. Credit to Moore and FDU- they played well. Purdue just couldn't snap out of their funk the entire game...

I only saw the last five minutes. I can’t understand how he only gets 11 shots. I saw him get fed once, and he posted, held high, and kicked for a missed three.

After NU brought out the DUI chant, Gillis went 5 for 25 from 3 the rest of the season. Go Cats Go.

They flashed a stat where Purdue was like 5 for 45 when you took out dunks & layups

Give FDU some credit. They are a well coached team. They looked great Wednesday despite being so small.

Hope this doesn’t get into our team’s heads that their biggest W in school history just lost the biggest upset in tournament history.

Purdue choked about as badly as you can choke. Nobody other than Edey did anything. Gillis should have been benched once he refused to shoot. FD lost 15 games this year to schools I have never heard of.

But… they were extra motivated, I thought! I love that the FDU coach said he wanted Purdue to see it!

Their guards looked like 8th graders against the press
That’s actually how NU beat them earlier this year when they were #1 ranked, they couldn’t do anything.
Even the last pass in from the side, they somehow throw the ball so high over Eady’s head that no one can catch it when he’s about a foot taller than anyone on defense.

They’re a not very good team with an unstoppable inhuman efficient scoring machine added to it

At least the last ten minutes, every time Edey touched the ball he lost it immediately. A lot due to FD's defense but also he was just a half step slow. Chasing around a much smaller man on defense 20' from the basket took its toll apparently. I didn't watch Purdue much this year, but didn't they have anyone who could sub for Edey? He never came out for a breather.

This is on Painter. Purdue was in the double bonus for something like the last 10 minutes and no one was taking it to the hoop.
Edey was understandably gassed. Someone drive to the basket. Get fouled. Make your free throws. Win the game.
But no. Take a bunch of shitty 3s.

I watched the whole game. FD was swarming and pressing the whole game. They basically put two guys on Edey and packed the paint, giving Purdue all the open threes they wanted. And Purdue couldn’t hit crap.

FD also had that Boise State luck with rebounds, fourth chance points, and wing and a prayer makes.

They really wanted to win and Purdue had no plan to deal with their attack. And on defense, they wore Purdue down with the chase. It was very stoppable, but Painter just sucks in tournaments.

They took the game for granted and decided to sleep walk. Really poor performance.
Painter is a one trick pony. He builds his teams the same way and while they are descent to compete in the BIG, not really good to handle the variety in the Dance. He builds them to focus on having a big and building around that and not really prepared to face a good guard oriented team. Plus he had two frosh guards and it is hard to depend on frosh guards when things get tight. And during the season we saw that the way you attack them is by putting the pressure on them and forcing the Frosh guards to have to play well and keep from turning the ball over. Frosh guards get tight when the pressure is on and they make mistakes. Heck they had a big lead on PSU and barely got out alive.

I told some people Thurs night that I thought they would have a lot of problems with FDU and came close to taking FDU over them in the pool I was in after I had seen them in one of the play in games. I knew it was a terrible matchup that Purdue would have a lot of problems with. Only reason I did not was it is really hard to go against a #1 seed. Bottom line, Purdue is built to do well in the BIG but they are built poorly to succeed in the Dance. All you have to see is that in the last three years they have gone out to an 13 seed, a 15 seed (t least that was not untill the sweet 16) and now a 16 seed. Those are often teams out of lower conferences that tend to be smaller and heavily guard oriented. The way you go after them is to attack and go down hill driving into them, But Purdue is simply not build to do that, They cannot really drive into the lane as with Edey it tends to get clogged up so driving pretty hard to do.

Or you can just say that Painter is a terrible coach.

Lotta people in on Eddy being the problem when he wasn’t. He scored 21 points on 7-11 shooting plus 7-10 from the line. He brought in 15 boards and had 3 blocks. The biggest problem by FAR is he only got 11 shots!

Meanwhile, Braden Smith, freshman guard, had 7 turnovers. Seven! That is… not gonna get it done.

This is how Painter has the team constructed. And this year he depends on not one but two starting guards that are Frosh. They are built to compete with bigger more standard major conference teams but they are vulnerable against smaller more guard oriented teams and they are always a high enough seed that that is what they often face early. If you are going to do well in the tourney you have to be able to handle a variety of types of teams and under Painter, Purdue has not been constructed to do that.

People kept talking about their guards being freshman. It is more like their guards are terrible which means they are not being coached correctly or they don’t have the talent. How after a season of B1G play can you not be able to consistently feed Eady? FD had one day to prepare and they flustered the Purdue backcourt.

Edey was absolutely not the problem. The fact that Purdue never adjusted to how teams successfully attacked them all year long was painfully obvious. Didn't think this Purdue team was good enough to make the Sweet 16 but figured they'd lose Sunday.

FDU DIDN'T EVEN WIN THE 32ND RANKED CONFERENCE IN THE COUNTRY.

Edey had one shot in the last 12 minutes—against the smallest team in the country. Painter should be charged with malpractice.

A year in the B1G might not be enough experience for the average guard, even with decent coaching. Inexperienced guards have killed a lot of teams in the last two days.

Terrible shooting also mattered.

Edey made some boneheaded plays, like bringing the ball down after a pass or rebound when he had three guys hanging on his knees, but he did what he could.

Having him play so many minutes and having him come out to the perimeter was bad coaching imho. it wore him out and allowed their guards an open lane. They made a lot of layups.

It seemed every time he got the ball he was being triple teamed and as good as Edey is, even he could not handle that for 40 minutes.
Edey said in an interview after the game that they double teamed him front and back the entire game. Sounds like Purdue didn't really have a plan for that and weren't prepared for such a short team to limit his effectiveness. Short sighted game plan really. Purdue should have been prepared to play a game that didn't rely on Edey just to keep him rested for the next game. Short sighted IMO.

“Short sighted”…

It’s weird to me because that’s basically how the Cats shut him down - the sandwich. Painter should have seen it coming.

I wonder if they thought it was a gimme and spent their time preparing for a Sunday game.
