In light of yesterday’s fair catch put it on the 3 debacle:
I remember that when the rule was enacted, I read that a muffed catch outside the end zone on a fair catch placed the ball at point of recovery, and not the 25. I do not remember anything about a player not signaling on a kick where another player does resulting in last night’s result, that is, ball placed at point of catch, and not the 25. I assume that is in the rule somewhere?
I also remember a play where the other team’s punt returner gave the “poison” arm motion, then picked up the bouncing ball and ran for a TD, similar to the swinging motion on last night’s kick. On that play, the arm swing was ruled “an invalid fair catch signal” if memory serves, and the ball was placed at point of catch, with the TD overruled. If the invalidly signaling player caught the ball ( not he scenario yesterday), I assume the ball would also be placed at the point of catch, but not the 25. Does anyone know for sure what all the permutations are on that rule?
