247 has this overall “Recruiting Talent in College” compilation that ranks overall recruiting talent on the roster. For those who are saying our individual classes are ranked too low because our class sizes are smaller, I wonder your thoughts here.
This has us as having, on the team now, the #46 ranked level of recruited talent in the country. This is #9 in the Big Ten. Go back to previous years and this ranking doesn’t seem to change much.
To those of you who want to come up with arguments why this data is ‘wrong’ and staunchly believe that we are a talented team, relative to our opponents, who is poorly coached, please get me past the ‘in your face assessments’ of recruiting experts that have us, a program more often than not lately in the top 20-35, with a level of recruited talent behind 45 other programs.
To me, and I am not the expert on coaching techniques as PPD and EvanstonCat are to see where our coaches are so clearly failing, both on the field and in molding these top talented men into NFL prospects, it seems that this assessment of our talent is not unique to 247, and our coaches have FAR outperformed the talent they have in the system. If this is not ‘coaching them up’, I don’t know what is.
That said, if we want to campaign against our coachs’ recruiting success in gaining commitments from their own top identified players, I’m right there with you. But this narrative that our players are ‘very talented’ compared to their BT brethren and FCS talent overall is not supported by anything other than your own film assessments, and those opinions seem to be in stark contrast to those of the individuals who are loooking at far more films than you and whose careers are based on assessing talent. This group includes both recruiting ‘experts’ and the hundreds of college coaches out there whose careers are based on identifying the most talented kids.
