Am I supposed to root for Stanford and Duke? Conventional wisdom says we should root for them for the strength of schedule aspect; however, I have another thought. We go up against them for recruits all the time as the schools are similar from an academic standpoint. That's why we play them. As such, I want them to suck, big time. That way, a smart kid knows that NU is the best place when you combine academics and football. I think I should root against them so we can further our argument in having the number one position in non-traditional powerhouse elite academic schools.

We don't compete with Duke for recruits as much as one might think. Stanford is obviously a different story.

I think we absolutely want those two to win as many games as possible, because we will always hold the trump card if a win on the field. We have already seen the program put together a post about going undefeated against academic comparables and I promise there will be a whole lot more of that going on out of the public eye. Our coaches will plaster it on anything sent to kids for whom we are competing against Stanford, Duke, Vandy, BC, etc.

On Monday, Mike Greenberg did a nice job of promoting NU as the winner of the All Academic Bowl (beating Stanford, Duke and ND in a six game stretch).

By that logic, we hold the recruiting edge on Notre Dame because we beat them? I don't think that's the case and if they continue to be a top ten team this year, it definitely won't. If we go 8-4, while Stanford goes 10-2 and Duke back doors it's way into the ACC title game, our wins will be just a footnote that our coaches will try to use, but nothing too powerful. If NU goes 10-2 and Duke and Stanford go 6-6, then we can point to head to head record as well as program trajectory when claiming that we're better.

I dont think it matters what another school does if we are a winning program. We will get alot of love from recruits but fitz has the sole luxury of saying we beat stanford duke vandy notre dame.

Is it possible that if Duke and Stanford raise the profile of academic schools that it will make it easier for all academic schools to recruit talent to the extent that there are very smart people still going to football factories?

No.

Why o omniscient one?

Smart guys who already got o football factories go there because they are football factories. Success at NU, Stanford or Duke will never bring 100,000+ people to the home stadium, have rabid state-wide fan interest, connections with alumni, etc. that the factories provide. If a smart kid wants those things, they will continue to go to the factory.
