Scrimmage?

Is that something they typically do?

Also, I haven't seen much info about the secret scrimmages this season (and that goes for most teams, not just Northwestern). Don't the secret scrimmage opponents usually get leaked in October, or are they trying to keep even that detail secret this season? The last couple of seasons, NU has played Iowa State in Davenport (a nice spot about halfway between both schools).

Is there a scrimmage before the Howard/homecoming game? Is it open to the public?
Regarding this, I asked my daughter at NU if she had heard anything about an intrasquad game on Saturday.
She asked a friend who asked one of the student managers for the team.
He said "normal practice, not open to public."

So it doesn't seem like it.

Don't know about the scrimmage, but the first game of the season is an exhibition vs. McKendree on Nov. 1.

An open practice is always a good idea. LU holds theirs Saturday...So I am going to go to the practice...hop the L at 1:15 up to Evanston......the open practice is always cool to get conversation going on Ramblermania....Coach always does a Q and A after... wonder if NU has one but season ticket holders only???

Illinois’ “secret” scrimmage was to be Kansas again. It’s become a public exhibition to benefit Maui. An expensive donation exhibition. Lol. Cheapest seats are $80 in nosebleed.

NU intra-squad scrimmage is season-ticket-holders only. I don't know why they wouldn't just make it public, but it is what it is.

I believe the NCAA mandates inter-squad scrimmages be private/secret unless they're being used as fundraisers, like IL/KU.

Anyone season tix holders go to the scrimmage today? They look promising?
Yes. Defense is an emphasis and big Matt is a leaner and quicker! The scrimmage wasn’t pretty, but there was a lot of strong defense by the entire squad. The other big (grad transfer) looks good. Buie looks great. I think Berry could be great and a big scorer. But hard to really tell much. There were a lot of missed bunnies, missed shots, but this was the most competitive practice so far. Collins said it was #14 out of the allowed #, so about halfway through the preseason practices. Martenelli sat out (some minor non-specific injury) so BMac and Taylor Battle played which was fun. I’m sure others can fill in more details. An inter squad scrimmage in front of an audience is what it is. We’ll know more in time. But basically I’m bullish on our chances. Another STH friend said he’s never been more excited about an NU team at the start of the season.

I think Brooks B is poised to make a big jump in general.

Apparently students demand for tickets is so high that they have instituted some system where students earn points where the more events they attend they improve their place in the student ticket pool/line/whatever. That should translate to another season of great student section atmosphere.

I think Mullins could help some this year, based on that practice. Clayton has a nice handle but is very raw, and I thought Hunger showed he can give the team some quality minutes. The three Bs all looked good. Hopefully Clayton can be a reliable third scorer this year.

I liked what I saw from Mullins. He looked strong and had the ability to create.

I agree with Lunker. I liked several things from Mullins. I heard he'll be the second or maybe third guy off the bench.

I was REALLY surprised by the kid from Liberty. Talk to me at the end of November, but he may be a significant upgrade from TV.

In addition to Martinelli, no Langborg or Strauss. My understanding is they are being preseason conservative with NM's injury.

The bad news was there might be quite a bit of work to do. The good news is it's doable and plenty of time to work.

Thanks.

Sounds like the new guys are still thinking and learning on the job instead of playing. To be expected.

From the clip looked they were playing hard and having fun. Trying to build something special.

First month is critical for this team.

Is Langborg injured as well? If so, any details?

The only way I can see Clayton being the 3rd scorer is if Buie isn't playing... That would be sub-optimal...

Top scorer Buie or Barnhizer
#2 scorer Buie or Barnhizer
#3 - #6 Nicholson or Langborg or Berry or Martinelli (each of whom could average 10+ ppg)

Hopefully Clayton can be a reliable 3rd scorer in 2024-2025!

Agreed. Can’t image Clayton would be higher than 6th at best.

To me, only known things are MN is going to have 2-3 dunks and approx 10 rebs a game.

Ty is going to get his shots on the wing. hopefully makes more.

Boo will be Boo,

Want to see Brooks continue to jmprove and become an NBA player, but this year he will be a #2 option, facing tougher defenders and teams focusing in him. He struggled with that when UCLA did that last year.

Mullins/Lanborg has to prove he can play with quicker, more physical players.

Martenilli/Hunger have prove they can defend and rebound,

Freshmen have to keep from getting lost on the court.

I like the team and think they will be a 7th seed in the tourney, but still a lot to prove.

I was not at the scrimmage, so, naturally, I have thoughts:
  1. Mullins will be sneaky good for us, quality minutes on his was to being a very good 24/25 player. I really can't justify why I think this when I saw approximately 3 minutes of him playing, and those were highlights. Brain is processing his stats I guess and spitting out that conclusion through my loins.
  2. We will not see as much of Hunger as some of us would like. CC has been pretty conservative in pre-season. Of course an injury could change that.
  3. #4 position will be NM and BB splitting minutes
  4. Who plays #1 when Buie rests? Not many minutes, but Chase is gone and seems really wide open who will handle the ball in Buie's absence. I would not be shocked if Barnhizer did it. Seriously.

Hopefully not as an either/or.
Barnhizer will play 30 minutes a game, I'd assume, maybe 32.
I'm hoping Martinelli plays 20.

So a Nicholson / Martinelli / Barnhizer frontcourt getting opportunities...

But maybe you're right - if Clayton isn't capable of running the point (yet) then Barnhizer plays the point and Martinelli plays the 4 when Buie has to sit.

I was at a new student reception this summer hosted by our alumni club that current students attended too, and even the international students appear to be super stoked about NU hoops and talked about how hard it was to get tickets and that they would get ready with their phones to click on some app to try to get lucky enough to get tix when they became available. It seems we are turning into Duke.

A far cry from when I went to school.

I really wish the Athletic Dept. had taken this moment as an opportunity to expand the student section.

Gragg cited the importance of selling tickets to paying customers, but after halftime, not many people are going to walk up and buy a ticket.

So have the box office hand out un-sold tickets to students with ID at the break.

Or change the policy so that a sold ticket expires at halftime if it isn't used, then give all those "bought but un-used" seats to students.

Or designate Standing Room Only for students if the fire marshall allows it.

Smart ideas.

I...don't know how legitimate this is?
It would be such a stupid thing for someone to make up, but feel free to delete if so. I have no idea if the person is credible, but just seemed so implausible that someone would take time to come up with this.
