On Monday, Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald was outspokenly critical of his team's performance in the win over Stanford. Yesterday, he talked about why, and the great motivator at his disposal this season.

Story: Tired of being average ($)

I like him like this. Seriously. There were too many times in the past couple of seasons where as a fan/bystander he seemed like he was eating the losses without choking on them. If the message he's sending to the team is a need for toughness and constant improvement, there are definitely worse things...

This is what every coach does early in the year. When things are going terribly, you can't get too down on your team. You say things like, "we're a few plays away from winning." When you're winning, you do what Fitz is doing. You get after the team and give them a laundry list of what went wrong so they know they still need to improve.

I don't know why this surprises anyone. Remember last season when Anthony Walker came in against Penn State and had a great game? He ripped him to shreds in the press conference. Fitz made fun of the Freshman conference player of the week award that Walker won (this is the same guy that hands out practice player of the week awards). He pointed out all of Walker's mental erros and criticized the media for not noticing that. Walker took that, improved, and is playing like a complete stud.

You work on confronting and correcting when you feel it will do some good. At this point e is basically saying ":Don't get too high on yourself. We have a lot of things to correct.." We played great but there were a lot of mistakes that if we are going to go anywhere they need to correct.

Same point, but with a longer view: We have a chance to have a big year, but it won't happen without consistent quality effort and a little luck. Can we win the line of scrimmage against Minnesota? Maybe not, yet. Can we win our tougher games on the road? It depends. Can we outscore the opponent in the occasional shootout? Not clear at all, yet. Can we avoid the almost inevitable let-down? Yet to be determined.

We have accomplished 1/13 or 1/14 of our goal. This is absolutely no time to feel good about ourselves beyond setting some higher goals for the immediate future.

Perhaps... I sense something different from anecdotal evidence - that he truly sees that his program was trending the wrong direction and has taken swift and decisive steps to remedy it. I didn't expect this. Examples: Less coachspeak at interviews. Thorson at QB and aggressive defense. The offense was run-oriented, and it should be, but didn't we have a few key plays where he "went for it"? My memory is shot, but I kinda recall being wrong 3 or 4 times "oh it's 3rd and long, here comes a dive up the middle". Also his coaches have been like his grandchildren - can do no wrong - but it looked like he blasted Cushing for not getting the OL rotation the way he wanted. Very small sample size. Encouraging.

I respectfully disagree. It is the leader of his team trying to motivate his players to be great.
Hope Fitz looks in the mirror and emphasizes that he and his staff also need to come out hard next Saturday and put up 50 + on Eastern. Maybe the Stanley Cup will give then some incentive.

It is so predictable, kids just roll their eyes. They are motivated to be good or they are not. This comes back to recruiting. The days of firing on players and expecting them to all of a sudden care is over. Millennials do not react well to shenanigans unless they are highly motivated themselves. If Fitz is not satisfied the team needs to not be satisfied. In the past few years we had some guys who had their own agendas and it killed the team...,calling them out was not going to change that. The great thing about college football is you kind find a certain type of kid if you do your homework recruiting. Fitzy going all off in the media notwithstanding.

Let's wait and see. You can 'eye-roll' all you want, but if you find your a$$ on the bench due to poor performance, perhaps your attitude will change. One thing is clear, he didn't have the horses to do anything about it before, but now he's got some young depth that he can put in place of an underachieving veteran. it was all over the field on Saturday. I don't have to name names.

Why does nobody name names around here?

Weren't too many underachieving veterans on defense. Can anyone name one? Does anyone want to ? Must have been on offense. QB, check. Running backs, check. That leaves OL, WR and SB....

Because as Tom Hruby pointed out, these are 20 year old kids going into battle, essentially for my enterntainment.

It can easily be inferred what we are talking about if, for instance, one would say "I expect Garrett Dickerson to be playing a lot" or "apparently Thorson distanced himself in the QB race and gives us a chance to win". Vitale knows he dropped passes and Zack knows he's been beaten out by a Freshman. I see no need to beat it to death. There - named a couple of names. Better?

Plus Oliver may not be underperforming.

K... now can you point out some names of posters that should be on a short leash?

but there you said it, you can only bench a guy if you recruited an equally talented guy to create depth. Heck if you have studs who care they do not need the threat of benching to motivate them. All I am saying is the days of calling kids out does not go over well its more for the effect on the fans rather than the team. You either have kids who are motivated or kids who are selfish and do not give a rip. More talent and character is what gets it doen, not Fitz saying he is ticked off...Woody, Bo and Bob Knight days are over

stpaulyboy, I know you love kidding around, but I strongly suggest that no one make comments that will encourage personal attacks. I would guess that it would not go over very well .

IMO the principal reason for Fitz statements is that he doesn't want the team to get too high after a big win because there are still a lot of things to correct and areas that we need to get better and more consistent. He needs them to keep working on improving because our opponents will. Sort of "Enjoy it but realize we have a lot of work to do so don't get too full of yourselves"

We have a thread that some posters should be on a short leash. While it was a response to suggesting that Fitz should be on a short leash, I just think if we have that thread, we should include names. If that opens things up for personal attacks, then the thread should be gone. People are allowed to attack Fitz, the coaching staff, the players... I just think attacking the people that do that should be allowed.

I was partly kidding around on that one. It must be very difficult to maintain order when some people's personal identities hang on whether or not these 18-22 year olds perform as they expect them to, and often it seems more about us than about the team. At some time or another we're all easy targets.

You can think whatever you like, but I can tell you for a fact that personal attacks will not be well received . I strongly suggest that you attack the message and not the messenger, and don't press your luck.

I would like to short sheet Wrasslers bed just to see him get all mad in his purple jammies.
In Wrassler's case you would have to unshort sheet his bed as that's the way he has his butler make it up every night, so that he is constantly vigilant.
