I finally got a chance to talk to 2019 NU lead guard commit Boo Buie tonight. I tracked down a number for him late last week but he couldn't talk until tonight because he was on a marine biology field trip from Sunday through Tuesday night and off the grid. That was an interesting story in itself.
Anyway, Buie is a great kid. Very laid back, confident and conversational. He had a lot of interesting things to say. Here are a few things I learned:
- He found out during his official visit that he is actually related to new forward commit Jared Jones! Jones was fixated on Buie's last name on the trip. They called Buie's mom and found out that they are distant cousins on his dad's side. So they are gonna be more than teammates -- they're family. How about that?
- Buie said that Jones committed on their official visit, but Jones' dad insisted that Jared go on another visit first just to make sure. So he took his visit to Wake Forest and then committed to NU officially.
- Buie goes by Boo all the time and thinks that he will be listed as Boo Buie on NU's roster when the time comes. He says he doesn't even recognize Daniel as his real name. "Boo is my real name."
- He considers himself "a scoring point guard" and thinks he'll fill the lead guard role that BMac played. He scored 25 points per game last year for Gould Academy to go along with six assists and five rebounds. He says his strength is shooting and creating his own shot. He shot 41 percent on 3s during the season with Gould but over 50 percent for Mass Rivals over the summer. And those, he pointed out, where all off the dribble because the ball is always in his hands.
- Buie and Talor Battle are brothers. They have the same mother but different fathers. Battle was Buie's main advisor. He was surprised that Penn State didn't recruit him early and was all in for NU because of the education. He told Buie that his greatest regret was not taking school seriously.
- Buie reclassified his class last year. He was a 2018 but reclassified as a 2019 to get recruited.
- Get this: He said that Maceo Austin committed to Duquesne because it's close to home, but also because Lebron James called him during the recruiting process! Duquesne's coach, Keith Dambrot, coached Lebron for two years in high school. "When they really want a kid, they have Lebron call him," he said. Buie doesn't think that's a good way to make a decision.
