Am I in the minority on this one?

I'm sorry, but I generally hope the Cats play a close game and lose today. I'll take the rest and preparation for the Thurs/Fri game - especially for a Thurs game. I don't think a championship is going to make a ton of difference in the seeding.

Four games in four days is a lot, and this is still a pretty short bench.

Rest is overrated. Maryland had more rest than we did yesterday.

When everybody is a little tired and banged up at the end of the season, the adrenaline of winning trumps it all.

I thought about that too, but I figured that whatever team they play in the tournament probably is in the same boat, having just played their conference tourney. So we might as well try and win.

That's silly.

We've never been to this point. Every win matters A LOT. We're not UNC or Kansas.

Yet.

Candidate for dumbest post of the year. Has MysticCrap hacked your account?

To be fair, Sec112 just has a different mental goal. He is definitely not Mystic! He's thinking NCAAs right now (because it's our first trip and he wants us to have a good showing). Many of us are still licking our chops at the prospect of winning the BTT.

I am also not angry about the OP and I hope that is Wisconsin's plan ;) but momentum and confidence going into the tournament can be more important than rest. Just win!

Captain Kirk doesn't take The Enterprise back to earth for R & R EVER and NU doesn't turn away from a possible conference championship at the semis EVER.

Things worked out OK for Kemba Walker and UConn a few years ago after they had to win five in the Big East tourney. You could find examples on both sides. Let's win.

Is this team going to take their finals for winter quarter next week before their NCAA tourney opener? What if we make the Final 4? Will they postpone the finals until April? I am curious and hoping that they will not be distracted by the finals. Although, I learned a semester of macroeconomics in four hours the night before the final with the help of an athletics tutor and aced the final the next day. I am sure if they miss classes that some genius grad students will review what they need to know to succeed in the classroom too.

Winning the tourney (the Big Ten one) allows us to hang a banner as our first act in the new Welsh-Ryan. Let's not blow that.

Plus, as was posted below, the final game of the BTT will be on the video screen as the final "for the mass public" thing ever seen or done at "old" Welsh Ryan tomorrow (along with the selection Sunday announcement(. Wouldn't you want that game to be Northwestern playing for the title? What a way to send that old building out.

I want NU to win because I want a 7 seed. That takes two more wins (and some optimism).

Yes. .. you are in the minority

JournCat has got me. Among my many cheap, half-proven theories of March, I'm not a huge believer in tournament teams that win their conference tournaments the week before the NCAA tournament.

UConn blew that out of the water. And yes, yes, there are plenty of other examples.

Ooooo, never thought about Eurocat's thought. Good point.

Anyhow, the original idea is worth the Captain Kirk comparison.

I always want the Cats to win but I get where your coming from and somewhat agree. I'd like to add that I really don't like these conference tournaments. The regular season record is what should count. The early games played in half empty arenas and playing 4 games in consecutive days is certainly not like playing two games a week. There is a lot to dislike about these tournaments but TV money talks, so guess we're stuck with them but I don't to like it.

What are you talking about? It's going to be TWO Big 10 banners that night.

Unless we make the elite 8, no one will remember how far we progressed in the NCAA

But a Big 10 tournament champ? That sticks

Next year is our elite eight run, that team will be deeper and nasty

1) Every game the announcers will identify NU as "The Defending B1G Champs" at least twice, probably 6 or 7 times (I listened to the Spartans' loss yesterday and they said it practically every time they gave the score).
2) They will get more National exposure as Defending Champs and we expect them to be good next year so they will live up to the billing as the champs.
3) The announcers will also point out at every home game which is on National television that the Defending Champs are playing off campus this year while a $110,000,000 arena is being built.
4) The exposure of being the reigning B1G Champs would be off the charts, getting to the elite 8 (perhaps more difficult), not so much.

If NU wins the BTT a #6 seed is a reasonable expectation. Not guaranteed, but certainly reasonable. NU would have beat #23 Wiscy and #25 Mary to get there, while beating the other finalist. Hence one could make a reasonable argument for a top 24 ranking.

I generally agree with the value of winning the BTT. However, the defending B1G champ would be Purdue (winner of the league) not whoever wins the BTT.
I guess defending B1G-TOURNAMENT champ might be said, but I suspect it won't (unless during the 2018 BTT).

A sweet-16 participation is often highlighted. Of course reaching the E8 would be better.
Anyhow, I agree NU should try to win the BTT.
At the risk of stating the obvious, winning the BTT is the only fool-proof SUPER CERTAIN way of reaching the NCAA's not matter what. It's the ultimate lock.

I'm with Euro too. Don't we also get a cool trophy to put in our trophy case?

I hear ya! BT. Champs#

Winning the BTT would be a HUGE accomplishment! Much more so than winning one-two games in the NCAA Tourney, IMO.

Making the Sweet 16 would be a much bigger deal. Not even in the same conversation.

Sweet 16 would make an impact. Getting to the second weekend. Otherwise, you have to get to Final 4 to make an additional impact. But as you say BIG Champs sticks.

I've already expressed my dislike for these conference tournaments and I can understand and possibly support 112 idea. Question, who is the Big Ten Champ? Regular season leader or BTT winner? Who gets to fly the championship pennant? Face it these games mean very little.
