Generally state of IL and CHicago area have been home to plenty of top recruits but this year, only one of the top 50 and three of top 100/150. Has IL slipped or is this just a way down year?

Good question. In 2019, there is also just 1 in the top 50 and 1 more in the top 100. So much for "Home Grown"......

All these other schools came to IL to recruit and now the IL schools have to go elsewhere to find talent.

Are you not counting Lathom because he's at IMG? That doesn't seem right, but your point probably still stands.
I was not sure. Just looking at current listing and currently he is listed as in FL. That would add one more to the 100/150 group as he is 118 but still, seems way down from how IL has been perceived in the past. In fact if you look at it, NUs recruiting class is similar in overall rank to everyone but the top guy in the state. NU( 61, 97, 118),162 State of IL 20, (58, 94, 118). Don't remember anything close to that ever happening.

Where did THT wind up? Anybody know? Has he chosen a school yet? I don't remember seeing his choice itemized on a recent thread. Maybe I missed it.

Illinois still has plenty of talent but it's evened out with AAU ball. Kids interested in basketball play the sport 12 months as a full time profession anywhere in the country.

NU basically has close to 4 guys in top 150 or just outside (based on Young being 162) That is all the state of IL has. If it is assumed it takes top 150 players to compete in BIG, IL can no longer meet even its own needs. Sorry but that seems like a pretty big dropoff from even a few years ago where top teams from around the country came to IL to poach the top talent as the basis of their teams. One year can be an aberration but iff it continues....

I don't disagree. I would add that because of NU's academics and the smaller pool of recruits that CCC has to draw from, this year's geographic distribution is typical. It's a nice idea that you'll tap into the Chicago hoops talent pipeline, but not a reality. The top national recruits out of Chicago have grandiose ideas about basketball and only a passing interest in academics.

City of Chicago keeps turning public basketball courts into parking lots. Not sure why, but it can't help.

I am not talking NUs needs so much. Just the general state of IL HS basketball

They might be in a down cycle for top 10 players. They'd had a rather incredible run for a while. But I would imagine there is still a lot of basketball talent to be had in Illinois. The vast majority of players on college rosters were not on top 150 lists. That's why Collins's class is considered special this year.

I am not talking top 10 but top 150. Only three in the state. Not saying that a lot of players on most D1 teams are not in top 150. But we are in the BIG and for that, it generally takes a fair amount of top 150 talent. Even on our team we had several. Look around the league and I think you would find overall that the majority of players for most BIG teams fall in top 150. OSU, MSU, MD, MI, IL, PU,IN, WI probably all have mostly top 150 players. Likely MN, IA and now NU headed in that direction. BIG is getting stronger than ever. Tough to compete in the BIG without top 150 talent. And this year and next does not look like much of it will come from IL

Well, from 2014 through 2017 we recruited four Rivals 150 guys — Law, Falzon, Ivanauskas and Benson. Falzon and Ivanauskas were sidelined this year. Law, of course, was an upperclass cog of the team, but missed several games due to injury. Benson made a fairly significant contribution as a freshman, but in a support role. So basically with two top 150 players, one of them not playing a full season (and let's not forget that Scottie was out for many games as well), we went 10-8 in a good league, won 24 games, won an NCAA game and pushed the eventual national runner-up to the limit. I'd say we competed pretty well. I'm pretty sure there are other B1G teams who got as many or more top 150 in that period who did not do any better than we did. All this is not to say we don't go after the top 150 talent, and I'm as thrilled as anyone that we got three this year.

What I'm saying is that I wouldn't give up on Illinois or any other state just because the gurus don't think they have a certain number of top 150 players in a given year. In a state with a major metropolitan area and a strong downstate BB tradition such as Illinois, I believe you'll find a good number of capable D-1 players most years. McIntosh and Pardon, I believe, weren't top 150, and they've turned out pretty well.

Not suggesting giving up on IL. Just noticing the lack of top talent this year and next, And the BIG looks like recruiting has gotten much stronger in the last couple years with about 50% or more of total recruits being 4 star (all top 150 but note about 25 three stars are also top 150) ) Going forward it would look like it will take more top talent to be able to compete.

The rating services also miss some guys, especially developmental ones or guys that were injured. The staff did it's job well in finding them.

To be fair, NU offered 3 Illinois players this season: Finke, Dosunmu and THT. Reportedly they went hard after THT and Ayo. All three could well end up at the State School. So it isn't like NU is ignoring Illinois.
