To pull this team out of the abyss, absent a movie type amazing season, will require a splashy hire followed by success. Thanks for this writeup.
Braun sure says all the right things. I’m pulling for him.
Sullivan should be the starter but the incentives for an interim head coach to go with the more experienced transfer are strong. This decision will be a big one for Braun and the program.![]()

Braun might end up being the "splashy" hire if he can get it together. Being splashy isn't the thing, it is if he is hungry to win and has a plan to do get it done. Fitz got the team to a certain point and it seemed he was content with resting on his past achievements, especially with that sweetheart contract they gave him. A ball control offense was not going to really get too many wins for us on the gridiron or with recruiting top talent as things were panning out. If Braun can rebuild the culture to what it was, but without overly relying on the defense, we might have some fun times ahead in the not so distant future. The next two seasons might not be the best, but if he can get the team on board with his vision and do better than expected this season, we might have found a HC without the interim label. To pull this team out of the abyss, absent a movie type amazing season, will require a splashy hire followed by success.

Meaning he might indeed make a big splash if he is the type of guy I have been writing about that can bring NU football back from the brink. He isn't flashy, but he will get results, then become a "flash" if you will. My point is he doesn't have to be flashy to be innovative or get the job done. Barnett or Walker weren't really flashy at all, just had a plan and followed through. Same with my uncle, he was considered sort of dull compared to Woody, but he won. Same with Haydyn Fry, Barry Alvarez, etc. Fitz was hungry at one point, but seemed to get lazy and full of himself at the end. The best HCs in CFB over the past several decades weren't really flashy at all, but they sure got publicity for winning.Curious to your definition of a “splashy hire”. I can assure you hiring Braun is not it. 🤦♂️
