Takeaways: Northwestern 71, Dayton 66

Check out our takeaways from Northwestern’s key non-conference win over Dayton.
Good article. Thought it was notable that in the 2nd half Collins (and Lowery) called off the double teams in the post. Holmes was easily finding open shooters for Dayton. Smart move.

When you have a guy like Holmes who can eat you alive on offense, do you make a point to go after him on defense to 1) tire him out, and 2) get him into foul trouble?

That makes sense, but Nicholson was pretty passive/tentative on the offensive end and we just don't seem to think that way (forcing guys to defend the post) because Matt hasn't shown he can finish. In the past, he has gotten fouled fairly often down by the basket when he goes up strong. Matt spends a lot of time away from the paint setting screens and handling the ball - which is a little weird because when he gets the ball out there, nobody has to guard him.

I assume it is pretty much impossible to force a switch on a guy in the paint. Boo is SOO good at working in the trees in the paint, I think you might be able to attack Holmes with a pick and roll, but Holmes moves so damn well it would be hard to get him out of position and prone to foul.
