For clarity, yesterday was not by one score"We just showed that we play with anybody in the country," Hull said. "If that doesn't give us confidence, then nothing else will."
The above quoted closing comments from Hull were echoed by Coach Fitzgerald in his remarks on WGN as well. Fitz made it clear he wanted to see results for the seniors to go out with on a positive note this year and it didn't sound like waiting for 2023 was an option for him or the players.
Lest we forget, until today, there were only two games this season that we lost by more than a single score. Some have even suggested that had Sullivan been at the helm in all five of those one score losses, most would have been wins.
FWIW, Dave Eanet on WGN was much more complimentary of the team's execution of "The Wildcat" so I guess to some extent it is a matter of perspective as to whether the coaches should be faulted for sticking with it given its success under the conditions being faced.
While we had difficulty getting yards on first down, the incredible number of 3rd down conversions was impressive - another point that the WGN crew lauded Fitz and company for accomplishing. Conversely OSU did OK with 1st downs but couldn't get out of their own way on 3rd downs for most of the game. Anyone have the exact stats? (Well into the game OSU had converted only three third downs while Northwestern was in double digits.)
That's what I get for posting after midnight and still referencing ""until today" while still in a Saturday mindset. Can't really even use the excuse of the time change since officially the fall back hour does not occur at midnight. For clarity, yesterday was not by one score
