After a few days of failing to connect, I finally got a chance to talk to Newsome about his move to IMG. He gave standard responses as to the reasons he transferred -- the level of competition, getting accustomed to college life, optimizing his chances of playing as a true freshman, etc.
A few notes in advance of the story:
- He's been down at IMG since Saturday and just started practicing.
- Fitz was supportive of the move as long as he was 100% committed to NU. And Newsome is 100% committed.
- His teammates and coaches at Glenbard North are sorry to see him go but all supported his decision as a great opportunity.
- He's not on an athletic scholarship, but his mother, a single mom, qualified for financial aid. IMG is very expensive.
- He's planning to graduate in December (he's taking an online summer school class right now). He's not sure whether he's gonna enroll early at NU or not. He may just come back and work out for a few months. It sounds like Fitz made him think twice about it, but it's gonna be Newsome's ultimate decision. Fitz, as we know, doesn't like early enrollment in general, but he's supportive if the player is ready.
