Tavaras Hardy to Georgia Tech

Strange move in a lot of ways....at Georgetown he was in the Princeton tree with JTIII and was at a progrm that should succeed. Georgia Tech may be one of the toughest places in the country with the expanded ACC and Josh Pastner is considered by many to be a mediocre coach at best.

Atlanta has got a lot to offer to great young basketball recruits. If Tavaras is as good of a recruiter as we believe he might be, he'll be able to bring tremendous talent to Tech. I hope he succeeds.

I do believe that the academic restrictions play a part in athletic success . This is part of the reason why the football program has their own version of a "Princeton offense" head coach.

Seem to remember that Hardy was NU's lead recruiter for the "Georgia Peaches", thus must be quite familiar with that states recruiting.

Indeed. Maybe this move was more about self-preservation. JTIII probably isn't in hot water (though maybe he should be), but I'm certain that before he's ever given the heave-ho, his staff will be tweaked. At least Pastner is new to Ga Tech and presumably will have a few years before his seat grows hot.

Great point. There is a lot to be said for joining a new staff if you are in self-preservation mode. Assistants really are trying to just keep a job because unlike head coaches they are on a one year contract. Join a new staff and you should be there a while. Be on a staff fro a few years who is not meeting expectations and the head coach may change his staff before the Powers that be come after him. all in all I hope Tavaras does well but it still is strange to go to that program and work for that coach, especially if his goal is to be a ehad coach as he has mentioned many times

I'm sure that's still his goal, but he has been picky so far. He could have gone after any number of SWAC jobs or Division II jobs or a Chicago-area gig, but he knows that his appeal comes from recruiting kids for strong academic institutions. He ultimately wants a job like Ga Tech, G'town, NU, so it's best for him to continue working at those types of places and it's all the better if he can simultaneously expand his recruiting network from Chicago to DC to Atlanta now.
