Texas RB Kene Nwangwu will wait until fall to visit NU

Texas running back Kene Nwangwu says that Northwestern is one of his finalists, but he isn't planning to visit until fall.

I have to wonder if that is good for us or him. Sitting at 19 recruits out of a possible 21-23 at this point means we are close to the end. If he wants us, he is taking a chance. We could probably use another RB but do you hold a spot if he isn't visiting till then with the potential of getting shut out if he does not sign?

Doesn't it make you think that he is really hoping for a different offer but holds the NU offer as insurance. That is better for us than committing and decommitting IMO. He has probably heard Fitz's no dating other programs policy and is respecting it.

Would Fitz ever hold a scholarship, let's say one he might give to a walk on, for a guy like this and tell him he is doing it? Would he do that for an even bigger prospect? I don't find that objectionable.

It isn't like what he is doing is unusual. In fact, this whole recruiting cycle is anomalous for NU. I cannot recall a year where NU essentially had its class full the July before the kids senior season. Maybe recruiting for everyone has sped up, but I can recall many recruits at games the fall of their senior season.

Here are the number of commits by July 11 for the last 4 seasons. Roughly 1/3 of NU's commits each year occur later than this date:

Class of 2015: 13 of 20
2014: 10/15
2013: 12/19
2012: 12/21

There's nothing wrong with holding a couple of scholarships in case someone comes in late. In today's recruiting climate, getting guys early doesn't necessarily mean you have them on signing day anyway. If some of our commits have great senior years, other schools will undoubtedly make a run at them.

Yes, but in NU's case this year, our class is getting full early so anyone who is seriously considering NU has a smaller window unless recruiting communications have been made to give the recruit some assurance that a spot is being held. We had a rash of commitments when a wave of new offers went out, some guys who were on the fence jumped and some of the new offers took them, and some lost their chance. I got the feeling that the staff did a good job of communicating with those who held offers that new offers were going out and the spot could be taken.
Even if it is early in the cycle generally, it's getting later in NU's class cycle unless assurances have been given to the contrary.

I think we are done with commitments for the summer. The remaining 3-4 spots will be filled in the October-December timeframe by kids who emerge as seniors (lambert), by kids like Kene who need to wait for official visits to see the schools, or hopefully by highly rated players who give NU a second look because of our strong performance during the season (Larkin, Stewart).
