I’ve heard this system is based on “read and react”. Doesn’t seem to be a good system for this program.

Wasn't that McCall's system for the offense? We were told by the experts that the QB is supposed to read the defense and then call out all the blocking assignments, etc. Sounds like a lot to put on one player.

^ Hope not, as we can then pretty much kiss young bucks like AWalk and Fisher making an immediate impact.

Takes time to learn the read/react well enough to go at full game speed (notwithstanding that there is always a certain level of reading what the opponent is doing, no matter the scheme), which is a big reason why the O struggled in the passing game with a young QB (also took time for receivers to be on the same page).

That seems about right based on last week. But the reading is about 2 seconds too slow and our LB's have guards, tackles, hell even wide receivers planted on them by the time they react. What the hell?

Ned said that Oneil/Colby needs to get out the 'cliff notes' PRONTO. No time to read the storybook, give those der linebackers a damn cliff notes version of reading. Cheat sheets always cut the time in half. Works in fantasy football as well.

LOL, sweeping conclusions after one whole game. Seems to me like you have no clue what you are talking about.

Except it's not just on the basis of one game, as putrid and damning as said game was.

We knew enough about JON's defenses once he was hired. This game was merely validation of what we feared.

For those who missed it, here are some analyses linked earlier when he was first announced on what to expect from O'Neil's system - take it for what it's worth and compare for yourself to what we have been privileged to witness during these years under Hank's assuring watch:

I thought I'd also add this comment from LACat which despite the humility with which he made it, in retrospect was also spot on.

I'm just a fan, albeit a long time one. I don't have the depth or expertise of Coral, MrCat, Glades, or Heat...Hell I played rugby in high school because football wasn't even an option, so WTF do I know, right? As many say, "In Fitz we trust".

But this quote made me spit up my Macallan's (almost)...

"...and players have said—off the record—they’re spending way too much time thinking, and not nearly enough time reacting. It’s an entire guessing game. Imagine trying to define mud."

If I didn't know that the article was about Jim O'Neil, I'd assume that Fitzpatrick was describing (now former) player feedback to Greg Colby's defensive game-plan design.

None of this is a surprise. It's exactly what many people on this board, those who simply looked at his track record, were afraid of.

Wow. Thanks Evanstoncat. Thats exactly what we saw on Saturday and its the same defensive employment that Colby used. This explains the huge glaring holes.

Says the guy who thought Mick McCall was a great OC
And who thought Hunter Johnson would never be a starter again
And who thought our OL was going to be great this year
And thought Jim O'Neill was a great hire

Let's just finally admit that none of us have a clue about what we are talking about, most especially you.

LOL, so predictable that you would agree with this. Are you people this irrational, impulsive and borderline neurotic in your personal and professional lives or is this just an online schtick? You should be embarrassed of yourselves.

so tell us what the problem is. "Loss of production"? because the defense was god awful in all phases for the entire game. It's not like we have 8 freshman playing. We have returning All American, a 3 year starter at LB, an inexplicably cocky Defensive Backfield, a multiple year DL starter that sat out last year. Two incoming transfer DL's that allegedly have talent and experience. Even the other two LB spots are manned by guys that have been around a while. If not the scheme, then...what? Lousy players? Ill prepared? if so, why less prepared than MSU? MSU is peppered with like 20 transfers that had no idea where East Lansing was prior to like January. Why were they better prepared?

There are many posts on this site that discuss what went wrong last friday night. I have my opinions, which I have expressed but really that is besides the point here. No one is happy with the performance or the outcome of last Friday’s night’s game and I don’t take issue with anybody being critical of that performance. I certainly am. What I take issue and find reprehensible is this sweeping conclusions about O’Neil’s system and what it entails, about O’Neil being Colby the second, about Fitz needing to fire O’Neil. None of us know enough, especially after one game, to reach these type of conclusions. That is especially the case with the posters on this board who have been making all the bombastic statements since last Friday. It’s the same group of clowns who have no clue what they are looking at when they are watching a football game and who post the same crap every time NU loses a game. It’s a joke.

Like Fitz closing his eyes to hang on to Colby, so a few NU fans are closing their eyes to hang on to the overmatched O' Neil. Hard to remember the last time NU played such bad defense.

I think you are sensitive because Colby sounds like Corbi. /s

Yeah the "fire X" crowd, which I've been part of in other instances, does get overly excited about small sample sizes. I am, however, disappointed at what looks to be, at best, poor preparation on the D. It reminds me of Scott Frost's quote where he said something like 'as soon as (ILL) lined up, 75% of our game plan went out the window'. Will they get better? Almost assuredly. Will the results of that game have much of an effect on the total season? Probably not. Sparty played well and was prepared. If we played them at our best, it is a toss up whether we'd have won anyway, especially with our kicking disadvantage.

The nagging thing in the back of my mind - what if MSU isn't really any good and our defense/scheme really IS that bad? That's scary.

The clowns had a clue. We knew what we were talking about after one game. It's a joke that you didn't.

Yes, EC. Sadly yes.

I keep bringing this up in the hopes that it gains traction. Last year, after one bad defensive game for your nemesis, Ryan Day demoted Kerry Coombs and had their DB coach call the defense. Then he fired Coombs and hired Knowles at EOY. All around us, there are examples of "put up or shut up". Harbaugh took a pay cut but then succeeded. Frost and Alberts reached an agreement and Alberts STILL didn't wait. AFAIK, Dr. Gragg took CCC to the woodshed.

In the scheme of things, college football isn't important like the Ukraine conflict. But to this team, this program, this university, it critically important that Fitz take decisive action. I believe he won't, and I feel we will have several more ass beatings before Fitz has his woodshed meeting in late November

I want to be wrong, but the sample size gets larger and larger.
