I’ve visited Sacramento a few times in the past. It’s been a halfway meeting point for me and my sister who lives in the Portland area to get together. Maybe others might chime in as well. I can suggest a couple museums I’ve enjoyed.

(These 2 museums are in Old Sacramento.)

California State Railroad Museum

I’m a rail fan so I’ve found this an appealing place to visit. Wonderful train exhibits and a theater to watch film. A must-see if you have children. I’m not sure about the status of rail excursions, the website was vague about them.

Crocker Art Museum

This is a wonderful art museum that has a nice collection of art by Wayne Thiebald, a local artist who passed away in 2021. He had a studio in Sacramento for decades and is noted for his art featuring desserts and other food, though I’ve found his art to be very diverse and have enjoyed his landscape paintings and portraits as well. Crocker has an ongoing exhibit honoring his large body of work.

If you have extra time, drive north and visit the gold rush town Auburn, CA. It has a cute historic downtown and another nearby area that looks like it is stuck in the sixties. There are some nice wineries and breweries in the area to visit as well. Very scenic rolling hills so just drive around and enjoy the landscape.

If you happen to be near Davis to catch the practice, you should go to murder burger, now redrum. Classic old time burger establishment. Surprisingly, their fish sandwich and onion rings are to die for. Just off of I-80 in Davis. No suggestions for Sacramento. I’d say if you want to see breathtaking amounts of snow, take the 1 hour drive up to tahoe.
