Thoughts from tonight

Thoughts from tonight, in no particular order...
- Mac looked good again, especially early. They started overplaying him and Tre later. We will need more scorers against better teams.
- Tre had a mixed game. Shot decently. Over dribbled a bit at times. But in part no one else seems to want the ball so it goes both ways. Was a bit better than normal on D I thought.
- Olah kinda disappeared for stretches. He's gotta get better at establishing position down low. A couple good rebounds late.
- JVZ is improving. Showed a bit more aptitude finishing down low.
- Skelly good to have back. He's not flashy but he's a better defender than the other forwards right now. And when he gets the ball inside he is decisive. Some good interior passes too. Looks like he's earned more PT.
- Ash also got a bit more action- I think Collins is going more with people that can defend and run both ends of the floor. Still a bit tentative on offense but didn't really make any mistakes.
- Lindsey looked tentative I thought on offense. But he played better D tonight than he has most of this season.
- Falzon we need in there some cause of his offense. But he needs to improve on defense some. And Tap a similar comment though less dynamic on offense.
- Lumpkin is a solid role player, and he's improved as a spot up shooter. He won't make plays on offense himself, but he does a decent job of spacing the floor.

Overall, not a great game today, certainly could have been better in 2H. But we showed flashes of improvement on team defense, which is promising. I think Collins will increasingly go with guys that can guard as the season progresses. And our depth looked more promising tonight than it had earlier this year.

So still plenty of work to be done, but keep the young guys improving and there is promise. I'm still viewing 9-9 in conference as the goal- I wouldn't say I expect us to get there, but it's not out of the question. Let's hope in the next few weeks we can get B Mac and Tre a bit more rest, as I don't want Bryant to tire out in the second half of the season again.

Also, mentioned in other thread, but the early season reffing makes these games frustrating to watch...

I was surprised at how much better JvZ is doing on FTs. He has slowed down his motion and is shooting with more arc. Yes, he had one air ball, but looks much better than he did in the Lowell game.

Lindsay has been surprisingly tentative on O. He passed up at least one open 3 down the stretch and didn't seem confident when he had the ball. Falzon is in a bit of a shooting slump it seems to open the season. Need him to get untracked. Once Lindsay and Falzon gets going our offense will be much better.

How much did Ash play? How did he look? How did I miss him?

He did well. Solid on defense, and buried a three-pointer (his only FG attempt). He was set and ready to shot when the ball came to him. He's not going to be a playmaker this year, but he plays smart and doesn't try to score ten points on one possession. He understands his role...doesn't make TOs. Maybe down the road he can add more on offense, but right now he's not hurting us when he's in there.

I think as the year goes on we will see him about 10 to 15 minutes a game. Right now he is like Falzon, just trying to get used to the difference between college and high school basketball. I think the speed of the game is a big change to both of these guys. I find it interesting how his minutes have increased in the last few games. He obviously has been improving in practice and probably looking at film of his weakness. The same goes with Falzon. The first game shooting 25 footers, the second, third, and fourth game starting to drive to the hoop and in the last few rebounding and improving his defense.
By the way Ash was mainly a two guard in high school at St. Joe's. If I recall the point guard went to Nebraska.

My thought: you can't give teams 15 more FGA than you get and expect to win games. Have to clean up the defensive boards or we're dead in the water.
