I take my son to swimming lessons on Saturdays at 11:00 eastern. Today I realized that in three weeks I'm going to have to rush home afterwards to make it for kickoff. And if I didn't have a wedding that weekend, I would be going to Evanston.

I like that I have to make these kinds of plans now. The other 40 Saturdays of the year are so boring.

Three more weeks.

Are you headed to Evanston for any games this year, Smelly? I'll likely be at the Eastern Illinois game and then the Illini game at Soldier Field. First time to see a 'Cats game in person since the Cal game in Berkeley two years ago. I'm fired up.

NU Houston, Frau and I are also going up from Houston for the Eastern Illinois game. It would be nice to see you there. For that matter, do you know if there's a designated viewing spot for this year's Cats football in the Houston area? We've sort of missed out on the last couple of years' gatherings.

Hi WildcatWillie, good to hear from you. I'm sure I'll see you at or before the Eastern Illinois game, maybe at one of the tailgates. Regarding game watching in Houston, I'm a bit out of the loop myself. We're in The Woodlands now, after having been in California for a couple of years, so getting into town is harder. I think they moved around to several spots last year, since the place we used to go to (Beck's Prime) closed down. I'll see what I can find out about watch parties this year.

That was a good time Houston. I'm not sure it's going to work out for me this year. I keep looking at the schedule and trying to find one that works, but there's always something that prevents me from going or planning it. I may try to get up there for the Sept. 26 game, but I'd rather see a Big 10 opponent.

A DVR has become indispensable since I had kids. You can start watching games at halftime, and easily be caught up by the 4th quarter fast-forwarding through halftime and commercials.
