Transfer Portal Opening Now Pretty Much Makes Bowl Games Meaningless

The fact that most semesters start in mid-January is not a valid reason for the current transfer policy. A player who is enrolled in a fall football program has an obligation to support that team all the way through post season bowl games. He received a scholarship to take him that far and he needs to honor it through the post season.

If he wants to transfer to another school after the season he will just have to wait until the next school period starts. That might be in the spring if the new school is on a quarter system, or the summer if the school is semester based.

Might he have to give up spring practice for a semester-based school? Yes, he will. That's the price you pay for transferring. You can't always have everything perfectly the way you want. But you need to fulfill obligations to the people who helped you get started.

Says who? Players do what is best for themselves. This is abundantly clear and has been for a long time.

Behind the scenes, a lot of these kids aren’t thrilled with their situation as a back up. They think they should be in the field not the pine. Obligations? That would be great in the land of rainbows and sugar plums, but it is not reality. Do you really think they feel they need to be loyal to the team and pass up an opportunity that likely won’t be there in a few months for good ole State U? It doesn’t happen much and their teammates rarely if ever criticize them for doing this. It’s the Coach and especially the fans that get their nose out of joint when this happens.

I wish there was a way around this, but the timing just doesn’t work.

I am sure there are a thousand legal reasons why the following won't work, but wouldn't a consulting or an employment contract be appropriate here? A team can't stop a player from leaving but perhaps they could restrict their ability to play elsewhere for a period afterwards. That could include activities such as any team supervised events, preparations for an upcoming season, etc. Thinking about it, though, that might be a tough non-compete. Penalty clause? Plenty of competent attorneys here who likely have an opinion.

The playoff already made bowls meaningless outside of the fan bases involved. TBH, lower tier bowls were already meaningless outside of the teams involved. If we had a little overlooked bowl, we’d be excited right now too.

I said this everywhere as they were planning the playoff expansion and nobody seemed to care much.

As it is, guys other transferring when they need to to get on their next campus for class.
