Trib article/headlne in my inbox:

Northwestern welcomes freshmen to campus after spending summer dealing with athletics program hazing scandal

(from the sports desk)

The writer basically used the zero-news (and less than zero SPORTS news) event of freshmen arriving to campus as a platform to recap NU's athletic issues over the past couple of months (complete with links to all stories).

I'm just baffled how this made it past an employed editor with any sense for news. Fluff piece of "Little Joey got dropped off at Northwestern today to start college...the Big Ten school embroiled in athletic controversy."

I couldn't shake my head harder in total disgust.

I subscribed to the Trib online for many years(even after moving to Tucson). However after it was acquired by Alden Global Capital , it went downhill (major staff cuts including several excellent columnists) and I ended my subscription.

The Sun-Times (now affiliated with WBEZ) is a nice alternative

Yuengling is also a nice alternative to Bud Light. Just ask @No Chores

You guys do realize that since you've graduated from college, Americans have learned how to make good beer again.
Coors was the beer of choice back in my day in the early seventies at NU. Friends driving thru Colorado would always buy lots of Coors 6 packs to bring back to campus to share. Visits to friends and family in upper state NY led me to discover Yuengling, a favorite. I’ve spent some time at the Genesee Brewery in Rochester, NY. Growing up I think “Old Mil” was the beer of choice locally. I don’t think breweries in Ohio back then produced beers that were pretty bland.

In Wisconsin, where I went to college in the ‘60’s, Huber Beer out of Monroe, Wi. was the brew for college students on tight budgets.

Probably done by AI

The Trib is floundering. It seems their Sports Dept has lost sight (or never had sight to begin with) regarding what constitutes a news story.

Another case in point was their ridiculous "scoop" about the mistake in Braun's resume. Their desperate attempt to dogpile onto the hazing story.

It was a novelty at the time as it was not available. You only had the national brews and some regionals such as Hamms Falstaff, Heileman and maybe PBR etc. There were not all the craft brews there are now but it was about something different and that made it special. I remember a few others that people would bring including crap like Grain Belt. Coors was an upgrade and was the biggest but there were others. Closest examples now might be something like Speckled Bovine or as you say things like Yuengling

I used to love Walters beer ..could get it at the SPot on Broadway...back in the day
Chicago Sun Times. Hardest working paper in America.......

I had a roommate from Colorado. He was definitely popular coming back to Northwestern from school breaks.

What about the Beast? That was a staple in keg form for our house.

I buy what is on sale at Kwik Trip, most recently 30 packs of Hamms for 14.99. Cheaper than bottled water

In case you're wondering, they're $12.50 (with tax) for tall boys at Wrigley. I personally opt for the Schlitz which is quite tasty.

Actually McCulloch but I knew Elder Hall well as it was where I bussed dishes and had lunch.
Yeah, I have a photo there in Elder Hall too that I’ll try to locate.
I knew it was McCulloch. I was on the 4th floor at the north end of the corridor

Oh Cappy, I offer a responsive, on topic and probably correct response and you delete to protect the snowflakes…while the thread devolves into which beer is better in which dorm…

Yep. Mine too. Curved two person desks are a give away.
I was in Elder Hall my freshman year as well. I think some of us referred to them as "bikini-bottom desks". But I suppose "curved two-person desks" is probably more politically correct. ;)

Never liked them, because they limited room/furniture layout options.

These should for some help to pinpoint the time period:

Great work my Alaska friend. I think we had the same dorm room as freshmen! I left it in good shape for you it would appear.

Looks like my room from Bobb McCulloch

McCulloch. Room 102

And the view now for those of us who faced the lake and could see the observatory - is now obstructed by SPAC:

OK, for those in Elder here is my one photo from the Elder lunchroom.

Have added a classroom photo as well - poly-sci I believe in the building just south of University Hall:
