They call themselves the "Top institution of higher learning in the State of Illinois and the flagship intercollegiate athletics program."

Is it hubris or just plain stupidity?

With Champaign Urbana at least 100 miles south of Evanston it looks like they are more like the Middle institution of higher learning in the State of Illinois. Geography may not be the strong suit there.

For better or worse, they are the flagship institution of Illinois. Would be nice if they played or behaved up to that level, though I guess that given the dysfunction in both Chicago and Springfield, U of I is a perfect representative.

Look, if they want to poke at us, I'm all for it, as I like this rivalry, or whatever you want to call it. If they want to claim that they're a higher institution of learning than we are based on some stat (like more programs, more students, more whatever), then I guess they should go for it.

That said, even if they believe in their hearts that they're a better academic school than Northwestern (which we all know is not true), they should be aware that the University of Chicago is also a pretty good school too. Are they trying to say they're a better school than THEY are?

I spent three years in Champaign. That "we're better than you, even though we really aren't" attitude permeates the place, despite the fact that it has a number of graduate programs in sciences and engineering and, I'm sad to say, their history department is ranked higher than ours (although I think size has something to do with it).
SmellyCat's comment about U of C really ends the discussion.

The funny thing is that UIUC is a really, really good school that produces some amazing research. That's pretty much true of all the B1G schools.

Plain stupidity.

I agree. What holds it back in the undergrad ratings is that the legislature a few years back decided to actively discourage out of state enrollees AFTER the administration wanted to take that course, to do the same thing that Michigan and Wisconsin and Indiana have been doing for years (esp Michigan), i.e. to encourage highly scoring out of state students to come here. Downstate didn't like that.

Agreed. I looked at a ranking of all public universities a few years ago and noted that 7 B1G schools were listed higher than the highest SEC school. The other three B1G schools were listed before the second highest SEC school.

Remember the scene in Risky Business where the high school student played by Tom Cruise is interviewed by an Ivy League alum during a wild party?
"I guess it's going to be University of Illinoise then!"

What did you expect? These folks truly believe that their basketball program is one of the top 15 or 20 in the country. Comedic!!

Stupidity when they wouldn't even make the top 2 in the State of Illinois.

Still, no shame in that and they are a top 10 state flagship.
