What happened to that great "foundation" that Franklin "supposedly" left behind after he bolted Vandy for the Penn State job? They have been awful since he left and began their season with a 14-12 home loss to Western Kentucky last night, a team that gave up about 40 pts a game last year, although they were 8-5. This is what can happen when you get into the coaching carousel. Just sayin....

The SEC East was pretty weak when Franklin was at Vandy and the cross overs were pretty lucky. Power 5 wins while he was there:

2011
Ole Miss 2-10
Kentucky 5-7
Wake Forest 6-7
Uconn 5-7

2012
Missouri 5-7
Auburn 3-9
Kentucky 2-10
Ole Miss 7-6 (3-5 in conference)
Tennessee 5-7 (1-7 in SEC assuming easy non-con)
Wake Forest 5-7
NC State 7-6

2013
Georgia 8-5
Florida 4-8
Kentucky 2-10
Tennessee 5-7
Wake Forest 4-8

Georgia was the one team he beat that was over .500 in the a Power 5 conference. He wasn't beating Alabama or LSU. He missed them. He played Auburn without Malzahn the year Chizik got fired. His only win over Florida occurred 2 weeks before they would drop to the mighty Georgia Southern.

Franklin should get credit for bringing Vanderbilt to mediocrity. That's not an easy thing to do, but he didn't exactly leave a great foundation. Plus, Mason appears to be in over his head.

Agree with this wholeheartedly. I've always felt that Franklin is a "smoke and mirrors" coach who parlayed some EXTREMELY fortunate SEC scheduling into the Penn State gig.

When Franklin left, he took several recruits to PSU with him, and several other recruits either went elsewhere or didn't commit, so he actually took a good bit of the foundation along with him.

Agree, he short term destroyed that program by blowing up that recruiting class. You know, "they are my recruits" approach versus recruited for Vandy. There is no doubt he can recruit/sell but I have my doubts he can be an elite coach .

We haven't seen him actually have to coach yet. Had the crutch of rebuilding at PSU until now.

The insane thing is, he gets mentioned in the same breath as Meyer and Harbaugh.
Well of course he does. Name the three biggest scumbags who coach big ten teams: Jim Harbaugh, Urban Meyer, James Franklin... See all in the same breadth. What's the problem?

I was looking at it all wrong!!
